Help Your Child Avoid the ‘Summer Slide’ in Reading
Dear Parents/Guardians,
What is the ‘summer slide’? The summer slide is what happens when students don’t read over the summer. Often these students begin the school year reading at a lower level than they achieved the year before. Your child has worked hard to make great reading progress this year and we want to share some ways to avoid the summer slide.
Visit the Wilmington Public Library: take advantage of the motivating reading activities the librarians in the children’s room have set up for your readers.
Choose a book: here are some suggested summer reading lists to help you choose a great book for your child.
The URL is: https://sites.google.com/a/wpsk12.com/libraries/
Go online: There are many websites that encourage reading. Here are just a few: www.dogobooks.com, www.wonderopolis.org, and www.getepic.
Complete the reading log: fill out the attached log, return it to your school librarian at the beginning of school and receive a prize.
We hope these suggestions will help you take an active role in your child’s summer reading.
Have a fun and safe summer,
