Albert Einstein is one of the most famous scientists of the twentieth
century. He was the leading physicist of his time. A physicist studies
the movement and makeup of matter. Matter is the particles that make up
Einstein was born in Germany. He went to school in Switzerland. In 1905,
he got his doctorate degree. That same year, he published three papers.
Those papers changed physics forever.
In one paper he proved that molecules exist even though people cannot
see them. Molecules are the small bits that make up particles. In
another paper, he wrote down his ideas about light.
His third paper explained his theory of relativity. It is described by the famous formula E=mc. This paper showed that matter is a form of energy.
Einstein received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921. He lived in
Germany until coming to the United States in 1933. Around this time, the
Nazis rose to power in Germany. They took away Einstein's belongings
and his German citizenship because he was Jewish.
Einstein became a U.S. citizen in 1940. Although he once encouraged the
creation of the atomic bomb, he later worked against the spread of
nuclear weapons. He died in New Jersey at age 76.
