The Wooster Police Department bicycle unit is comprised of one supervisor and two patrolmen. The unit utilizes Trek and Cannondale patrol bicycles to patrol the streets of Wooster between April and November. Each of the four patrol division shifts has one bicycle officer assigned to it. All members of the bicycle unit are certified through the International Police Mountain Bicycle Association as police cyclist.
The bicycle unit serves the citizens of Wooster in several ways. The primary focus of the unit is to enhance the capabilities of the patrol division. Bicycle unit members routinely conduct drug surveillance, enforce traffic laws, and provide on grounds security for large events.
When not conducting routine patrols, many of the unit members give bicycle safety talks to local youth organizations. The bicycle unit gives each officer the opportunity to increase their skill sets, yet further the community policing philosophy that is embraced by the Wooster Police Department.
