The debate team returned to Dallas for the St. Mark's School of Texas. The annual tournament hosts two divisions — the "Heart of Texas" for Varsity debaters and the "Hoe Down" for second year debaters. Woodward achieved impressive results in both divisions. In the Hoe Down, sophomores Mona Mahadevan and Malachi Robinson reprised their second place finish at the St. Mark's spring tournament (the first-year "Round Up"). Mona and Malachi and teammates Joanna Kastle and Jayden Khatib competed in six "round robin" style preliminary rounds. MR debated teams from Peninsula (CA), Niles West (IL), Glenbrook South (IL), Westwood (TX), Jesuit College Prep (TX) and Berkeley Prep (FL) on their way to a 10-2 record. That was enough to advance them to the elims where the beat Greenhill (TX) in the quarters and Montgomery Bell Academy (TN) in the semifinals before bowing out to another Glenbrook South team on a 2-1 decision in the finals. Malachi was the 4th speaker and Mona was 7th. Joanna and Jayden also achieved an 8-4 record, but did not advance.
In the "Heart of Texas," Max Abramson '17 teamed up with Arjun Srinivasan '18. They attained a 4-2 preliminary record and beat Glenbrook South (IL) in the double octafinals before a 2-1 loss to Peninsula (CA) in the octas. Max was the 11th varsity speaker.
Congrats, War Eagles!
