The Woodward Academy varsity debate squad traveled West for the first time this season on Halloween weekend to compete in the Kirk Knutsen Classic. Hosted by our friends at the Meadows School in Las Vegas, Meadows is one of the most competitive tournaments on the West Coast with a field that includes schools from Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Utah. Seniors Rahim Shakoor and Jason Sigalos finished the preliminary rounds as the tournament's second seed after posting a 5-1 record (with wins over Notre Dame (CA), Juan Diego Catholic (UT), Bingham (UT), Damien (CA), and Gulliver Prep (FL) and a loss to Greenhill (TX)). After defeating Notre Dame in the octafinals and San Dieguito Academy (CA) in the quarterfinals, Rahim and Jason lost a close 2-1 decision to College Prep (CA) in the semifinals. In addition to reaching the tournament's final four, both debaters earned top-five speaker awards: Rahim 3rd and Jason 2nd.The other members of the squad that competed at Meadows were juniors Alex Duner, Zoi Rosado, and Karthik Srinivasan and senior Nasir Nanjee; both teams posted 3-3 records in the preliminary rounds, one win short of reaching the elims.
In addition to solid debates against West Coast competition, the tournament featured incredible hospitality from the Meadows coaches and families and gave students the chance to visit the famous Las Vegas Strip.
