At this year's Barkley Forum for High Schools at Emory University, Ms. Berthiaume was inducted into the prestigious Gold Key Society—one of the most respected institutions in forensics."In 1964, the Barkley Forum, under the direction of Glenn Pelham, former coach of BFHS winner Cairo High School (1959), began to invite successful high school coaches into an honor society known as the Key Society. The most prestigious presentation made by the Barkley Forum is the presentation of the Gold Key. Each year the members of the self-perpetuating Key Society invite a select number of debate teachers from schools across the nation into membership in a ceremony held during the Barkley Forum for High Schools."The fifth Key Coach from Woodward Academy, Ms. B. joined Robert Dillard Ballentine (inducted in 1969), Paula Harris Nettles (inducted in 1982, and present for this year's induction ceremony and Procession of the Keys), Ed Williams (inducted in 1996), and Frank Seaver (inducted in 2003) and became one of the youngest inductees in Gold Key Society history. This recognition celebrates Ms. Berthiaume's ongoing contributions to forensic education and reflects Woodward Academy's commitment to maintaining its status as a national model for excellence in debate.
