This is going to be a long week for many students. Our first five day week in a long time! It will be nice to have them for that period of time so we can get some things accomplished without any breaks!
We have several skills we are working on this week.
In Math, we continue to look at long division in different ways. Although this isn't how you or I learned the math, this program is teaching them the thinking behind the math and not just memorizing steps to solutions. We have seen a huge improvement in 4th grade amongst the students math abilities from this program. In the middle of the week, we will transition back to multiplication-only this time it will be double digit. There will be several ways offered to find the solution. Some of the division lessons will be challenging, however the multiplication should be easier for them.
This week we have focused on skill work in preparation for independent novel reading. I am reviewing and introducing new skills to the students from the last several weeks. One of the skills we have almost mastered is Subject/Predicate. It's been fun teaching them this. We use our morning note to review and examine sentences for this. We have also studied suffix and prefix...you will have noticed students had this for homework practice. Another topic they have mastered is identifying pronouns and explaining them to the rest of the students.  Lastly, we have had probably the best time with contractions. They've all got this. I didn't think it would take long with this group!
We will begin novel sets next week. I'm so looking forward to fostering that passion for reading through these novels. Students will be allowed a book choice according to their reading level and groups will be formed. All students will be working on specific skills in each novel including writing summaries and answering comprehension questions.
Please take note of the new band schedule in preparation for the upcoming concert next week on the 19th. I hope to see you there!
Please make sure your child has their journal home letter notebook. We will be writing to you on Friday.
