Room 220 February News
Happy February to all of you! We have had an interesting beginning to this month with all the snow days. As you know, the field trip was canceled and Mrs. Taylor is trying to reschedule it for another time. We were all disappointed, but we are hoping that we will get to go when the weather is more cooperative. I will let you know if we are going as soon as I know.
In math we are beginning Unit 4 of our Engage NY curriculum. I will send home the Parent letter for that unit. You can help your child at home by practicing math facts. I am also including a helpful website for the modules. The link is: http://www.lpssonline.com/site5520.php. As always, please contact me if you have questions or concerns.
In reading, we are working on phonics skills: ee, ea, e and y; o, oa and ow and we will be reviewing compound words. Those are the spelling patterns we will be working on as well.
For comprehension, we will work on summarizing a story. This is very difficult for 2nd graders as they are used to retelling a story by including every detail. Now we will be practicing looking for the most important information and using that to summarize the story. You can help your child at home by stopping at the bottom of each page they are reading to you and asking them , "Who did what?" This also helps them practice paying attention to what they are reading.
During Writing time we are working on researching dinosaurs. Second graders love learning about dinosaurs so we are having lots of fun and great conversations during our writing time. When we return from vacation, we will begin our unit on Westward Movement to support the Rodeo Unit that our Core team works on. This will culminate with a performance right before our Spring break. I will be sending home more information about that in my next update.
For further information on standards we are working on, please refer to the sidebar.
