Meet Our Local Advisory Panel (LAP) Chair

Colin Miura, who was formally appointed LAP Chair in October 2014, comes from a family that values education and public schools -- both of his parents were public school teachers.  Born and raised on Hawai’i Island, he has a marketing degree from Hawai’i Community College.  He is a 30-year employee of KTA SuperStores and is currently Store Manager for the Hawai’i Island grocery chain’s Waimea store.  He began with KTA as a bagger and has worked in almost every department until his current role.

He and wife Lisa have three children with the oldest two daughters currently attending WMS as 6th and 7th graders.  Both came to WMS from Waimea Elementary School.

Actively committed to public school family-community involvement, Colin served as an elected member of the Waimea Elementary School Community Council (SCC) and was Vice Chair for the 2011-’12 SY, and Chair for the 2012-’13 SY.  (SCC is the DOE/regular public school equivalent of LAP and serves in an advisory capacity to the Principal.)

Colin has also served on various boards and committees for his church as well as for an islandwide merchants association and community organizations such as Jaycees and Rotary.  He has also been involved in fundraising for numerous charitable organizations including Hawai’i Island United Way, American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.

The WMS LAP represents all school stakeholder groups including students, families, faculty, staff, school administrators, community representatives and members of Ho’okako’o Corporation, our not-for-profit Local School Board.

Everyone is invited to all LAP meetings and no RSVP required.  Time it provided on the agenda of every meeting for family and community input.

For info, please call WMS Interim Principal Amy Kendziorski (887-6090 Ext. 225) or the school’s Community Liaison Patti Cook, call 937-2833.
