ATHLETIC Announcements:

Congratulations and Good Luck to our Varsity Football Team who will be competing this Saturday, November the 17th with South Fayette High School at Heinz Field for the WPIAL 4A Championship!  Tickets will be on sale all week in the Athletic Office. Adult tickets are $10.00. Student tickets are $5.00. All tickets will be $10.00 at the gate. Kickoff is at 5:00 pm.


A reminder that the official date for Winter Sports is TODAY, November the 16th.  If you have not turned in your PIAA sports physical or re-certification please do so.



GENERAL Announcements:

The Fall Play “Twisted Tales of Terror” will take place tonight at 7:00 p.m.  Adult tickets are $8 and student tickets are $4.


Sophomores, juniors, and students traveling on Mr. Bonatesta’s trip to Italy and Spain next summer should turn in their Sarris Christmas candy orders and money to Mr. Shearouse in Room 126 by no later than the end of the school day on Monday, November 19.

Please see Mrs. Haggerty to sign up for the visit during homeroom the day before the visit.  An appointment pass will be issued for the teacher to approve for the college visit in the Guidance Office.

Information has been received regarding the 2019 PA American Legion 84th Annual Essay Contest. Students in grades  9 thru 12 are eligible. The subject for the contest is "HOW WOULD OUR FOUNDING FATHERS RESPECT THE AMERICAN FLAG TODAY?" The first place prize is a $3,500 scholarship. If interested see  Mr. Kilcoyne in the guidance office. Deadline is Friday, November 16, 2018.


A reminder to all senior golfers the George Benson Scholarship deadline for turning in this scholarship is Monday, November 19th.  


Are you interested in learning more about our nation’s military academies? Blue Gold Officer Doug Barrante and current Naval Academy student Alec Eckman will visit TJHS on Tuesday, November 20th at 8:00 a.m. to discuss life at the Naval Academy and the process of becoming a midshipman. Interested students can sign up in the counseling office to attend the informational session.


Any senior that has worked at a golf course for two seasons can apply for the Western PA Golf Association Scholarship. You must have financial need, academic performance and extracurricular activities along with employment at a WPGA member club. Deadline is November 30th.   


The Western PA Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program and the Mechanic Technicians Program are accepting applications for apprenticeship. Applications will be available on select dates between December 3-14, 2018 and can be downloaded at wpaoperators.org. The Western PA Construction Operators Laborers’ Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program is accepting applications year-round. Applications can be downloaded at laborpa.org. The Sodexo Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarship recognizes and rewards students who have made a significant impact in the fight against hunger. The scholarship recipient will receive $5,000 for their education as well as a matching grant in their name for the hunger-related charity of their choice.   If you have demonstrated on ongoing commitment to your community by performing unpaid volunteer services impacting hunger in the United States within the last twelve months, please check out the scholarship webpage or binder for more information. Applications must be received by December 5, 2018.


Talk your way to college?  You can if you’re a winner in the American Legion National High School Oratorical contest.   The Department of Pennsylvania American Legion awards the first place winner a $7,500 scholarship, plaque and expense paid trip to the Pennsylvania American Legion State convention to present his/her winning oration, plus the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania in the National and Regional Contests and receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from the National Organization.  The winner of the Pennsylvania Oratorical contest will move onto the National American Legion Oratorical program and will be eligible to win $18,000 for first place, $16,000 for second place and $14,000 for third place. An application must be submitted to the local post by December 7, 2018.


The Carson Scholars Fund -  $1,000 scholarship for high level academic students in grades 9-11 that also demonstrate strong humanitarian qualities.  One student will be considered for this award. If you would like to be considered for nomination, see Mr. Kilcoyne by December 10th .

The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholarship -   This scholarship is worth $20,000 for eligible student-athletes!   Students must be entering college in the Fall of 2019 at a four year college or university; have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be involved in high school sports, intramural sports or community-based sports.   The deadline for this scholarship is December 14th.


Seniors with a 3.0 GPA considering attending Robert Morris University in the fall are invited to visit the  website to view the information for the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship  worth $44,000 over 4 years.    Deadline is December 14, 2018.  


Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship - High School seniors,  Burger King employees, their dependent children, spouses or domestic partners, can apply to receive up to $50,000 in scholarship awards for 2019-2020!  Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, be passionate about serving the community, and plan to enroll full-time at an accredited 2- or 4-year school.    Deadline for application is December 15, 2018.


Attention high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace.The AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News and World Report  will be awarding 52 students with a $10,000 scholarship. Your application must be submitted online by the deadline of December 15, 2018.  


The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is offering $10,000 renewable scholarships up to $40,000 total per recipient to eighteen high school seniors.   Students must apply online. The deadline is January 4, 2019 or until 25,000 applications are submitted.


The PA JCI Senate is sponsoring two $500 scholarships for senior students in PA. These applications will then be forwarded to the national level for consideration to receive an additional grant of $1,000. Applications need to be returned by mail by January 11, 2019.   


Attention students active in Family and Consumer Sciences.  New scholarship opportunities are now available from the PA Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.    Deadline is January 14, 2019.   


The Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Award is for students completing their final high school year in 2019 who are planning careers in government service. Each student must write a one-page essay and also have a letter of recommendation. The scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.The deadline for application is January 15, 2019.


Seniors  will have the opportunity to receive scholarship funds from the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU).  Immediate family  members which include teachers, recreation and parks employees, PA National Guard, etc., may be eligible for one of six  $8,000 PSECU Scholarships. Students must apply online and see Mr. Kilcoyne by Friday, January 25, 2019 in the guidance office.   


Attention Senior Athletes!  The Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame will be awarding individual scholarships of $4,000 .  Senior athletes who have high academic achievement , athletic ability at the varsity level, and  financial need should apply. Deadline is January 31, 2019.


Seniors - Legacy Awards offered by the Elks National Foundation - Legacy awards are $4,000 scholarships ($1,000 per  year for four years). Any child or grandchild, step-child, step-grandchild, or legal  ward of a living Elk may be eligible. The online application is due by February 1, 2019.


SMILE SENIORS!  Is your winning smile a result of Good Orthodontics? If you are a senior that is a present or past patient of Good Orthodontics, this opportunity of  a $500 Smile Scholarship awaits you. Take a bite out of those college expenses and check out the scholarship binder or the scholarship website for more information. Deadline is February 1, 2019.  


Seniors of the Jewish denomination who demonstrate financial need are invited to view the information on the Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service. Applications are online.  Deadline for this scholarship is February 12, 2019.   


The Vegetarian Resource Group each year will award $20,000 in college scholarship money to graduating. high school students who have promoted  vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. One award of $10,000 and two awards of $5,000 each will be given.   Deadline is February 20, 2019.


Seniors - The Simon  Youth Community Scholarship Program  is being offered to students  living in proximity of a Simon Property Mall or Community Center and are planning to enroll  in a full-time accredited two or four year college, university or vocational -tech school. Students must apply online.   Deadline is February 20, 2019.


Epilepsy Foundation Scholarship -  Seniors continuing their education at a post-secondary academic or vocational program after graduation that have a diagnosis of epilepsy or a seizure disorder are invited to apply for this scholarship.  This year they are offering nine scholarships. Application deadline is March 16, 2019.


The Allegheny County Fire Volunteer Education, Service & Training Scholarship Program (FireVest) will again be accepting applications for 200 full scholarships for an associate's degree or certificate program at CCAC. Applicants must be a current member in good standing of an eligible volunteer fire company. Information is available on the website as well as the scholarship binder. Annual application deadline is May 15 (spring) term.  


Attention Senior Athletes! The Big Sun Scholarship is offering a $500 scholarship to help young athletes in their academic pursuits. The successful candidate must be a senior and currently involved in some sport. Deadline is June 19, 2019.  


Seniors who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity are invited to view the information on the 2019 Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Program.


Nominations for the Hines Ward 7th Annual Positive High School Athlete Award are now open, and over $100,000 in scholarships are available to Western Pennsylvania High School Athletes. The awards are given to student-athletes grade 9-12 who have overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools or communities, or just have an infectious positive attitude.


Students, information is available in the career center and website for scholarship, grant and loan opportunities primarily for Masons, their siblings, children, grandchildren and members of the Masonic-related youth groups.  The amounts and deadlines vary for the many available opportunities.
