ATHLETIC Announcements:

Boys Basketball will depart at 4:45 for Steel Valley HIgh School.  JV Game at 6:00.  Varsity at 7:30.

GIrls Basketball will depart at 4:45 for their game at South Park.  JV Game at 6:00.  Varsity at 7:30.

9th Grade basketball will host Uniontown at 3:30.  NO early dismissal.

Boys and Girls Swimming will depart at 4:00 pm for their game with Brentwood at Elizabeth Forward.  Meet begin at 6:00.

Boys Ice Hockey will compete at Center Ice Arena with Norwin High School beginning at 8:30.  

GENERAL Announcements:

Dancing with the Athletes is Monday, January 22nd....ANYONE interested in dancing should sign up in the main office.  The sign up sheets will be available Thursday, December 7th through Wednesday, December 13th for both the dancers and the athletes.  Athletes must be a senior.  Dancers can be in any grade.  

Special workshops to learn a dance and a song for the My Fair Lady musical auditions, which will be conducted following the holiday break, will be held after school on Tuesday, December 12 and Thursday, December 14. Character descriptions, the audition process, and audition scripts will be available at these workshops.  See Mrs. Barker with any questions. Hope to see you there.

Looking for a special holiday gift or stocking stuffer that won’t cost you an arm and a leg?  Then head out to Five Below at Southland Shopping Center.  The TJ versus Cancer Club is sponsoring a Fundraising Event , starting THIS  SATURDAY,  December  10  through SUNDAY,  December  17. Get a flyer form from  the TJ Cancer rep in your homeroom , go to Five Below and BUY, and present  the flyer at the register.  10% of the sales made by TJ buyers will be donated back to TJ Versus Cancer.  You will be supporting our efforts to provide education and support in the quest to eradicate cancer in the world.

Celebrate the holiday season at TJ by sending a special Holiday Candy Cane Gram to special friend, teacher, administrator, staff member, or hope-to-be friend. TJ versus Cancer Club members will be in the lobby beginning tomorrow through Thursday ,  December 12, 13, & 14, to take your money and have you fill out a message card to send.  All you need is $1 per candy cane & message (buy 3 and you get an additional one FREE) and the name and homeroom of the person to whom you are sending the message. Candy canes and your message will be delivered to homerooms on Wednesday, December 20! Make someone's holiday special by sending them holiday joy.

There will be a mandatory Big Jag Little Cub meeting in the Auditorium on Thursday, December 14th during Homeroom.  Please check in with your HR teacher and report to the auditorium.  We will begin promptly at 7:35.

GUIDANCE Announcements:

Students, information is available in the career center and  website  for Scholarship, grant and loan opportunities primarily for Masons, their siblings, children, grandchildren and members of the Masonic-related youth groups.  The amounts and deadlines vary for the many available opportunities.     

Are you considering a possible career in the military after high school?  TJ will be offering any student the opportunity to take the ASVAB (pronounced Az-Vabb) , which is the entrance test to be considered for any branch of the military.   Please see Mrs. Hornyak in the Counseling Office if you are interested in signing up.

Talk your way to college?  You can if you’re a winner in the American Legion National High School Oratorical contest.   The Department of PA American Legion awards the first place winner a $7,500 scholarship, plaque and expense paid trip to the Pennsylvania American Legion State convention to present his/her winning oration, plus the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania in the National and Regional Contests and receive an additional $1,500 scholarship from the National Organization.  The winner of the Pennsylvania Oratorical contest will move onto the National American Legion Oratorical program and will be eligible to win $18,000 for first place, $16,000 for second place and $14,000 for third place. First round participants in the National contest receive a $1500 scholarship.   The deadline is December 8, 2017.

The Carson Scholars Fund is a $1,000 scholarship offering for high level academic students in grades 9-11 that also demonstrate strong humanitarian qualities.  Thomas Jefferson may nominate one student to be considered for this award.   If you would like to be considered for nomination, see Mr. Kilcoyne in the guidance office by December 11th.

Seniors with a 3.0 GPA considering attending Robert Morris University in the fall are invited to visit the scholarship binder and website to view the information for the B. Kenneth Simon Free Enterprise Scholarship worth $44,000 over 4 years. Deadline is December 15, 2017.  

Burger King McLamore Foundation Scholarship - High school seniors, Burger King employees, their dependent children, spouses or domestic partners in the U.S., can apply to receive up to $50,000 in scholarship awards for 2018-2019!  Students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and plan to enroll full-time at an accredited 2- or 4-year school.  Deadline for application is December 15, 2017.

Attention Seniors interested in applying to Duquesne University - information has been received that the University is waiving the $50 application fee at this time.  If interested, apply by December 15!

Seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school, the community or the workplace - The AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News and World Report will be awarding 52 students with a $10,000 scholarship.   Your application must be submitted online by the deadline of December 15, 2017.

The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholarship is worth $20,000 for eligible student-athletes!   Students must be entering college in the Fall of 2018 at a four year college or university; have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be involved in high school sports, intramural sports or community-based sports.  The deadline for this scholarship is December 15th.  Students must apply online.

The Imagine America Foundation is a $1,000 scholarship to students pursuing post-secondary education at colleges across the United States.  If interested students must apply online.  Recent high school graduates have until December 31st to apply.  High school graduates of the next year can start applying on January 1st.

The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is offering $10,000 renewable scholarships up to $40,000 total per recipient to twenty high school seniors.   Students must apply online at  The deadline is January 4, 2018 or until 25,000 applications are submitted.  

The PA JCI Senate is sponsoring two $500 scholarships for senior students in PA.  These applications will then be forwarded to the national level for consideration to receive an additional grant of $1,000.   Applications need to be returned by mail by January 5, 2018.  

The Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Award is for students completing their final high school year in 2018 who are planning careers in government service.   You must write a one-page essay and also have a letter of recommendation.  The scholarships range from $500 to $5,000.  The deadline for application is January 15, 2018.

Attention Senior Athletes!  The Pittsburgh Chapter of the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame will be awarding individual scholarships of $4,000. Students must have high academic achievement, athletic ability at the varsity level, and financial need.  Deadline is January 15, 2018.

Attention Senior Female students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree program in engineering, mathematics or physical science, the Westinghouse Women in Nuclear (W-WIN) $5,000 Scholarship is now open.   Students must apply online by January 19th.  

Seniors will have the opportunity to receive scholarship funds from the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union (PSECU).  Immediate family members which include teachers, recreation and parks employees, PA National Guard, etc., may be eligible for one of six $8,000 PSECU Scholarships.  Apply online and see Mr. Kilcoyne by Friday, January 26, 2018 in the guidance office.

General auditions for the Tamburitzans 2018-2019 performing season will be held on February 7, 2018 at the Tamburitzans Administration Building, 1801 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh, PA.  Each year over $15,000 of scholarship aid is granted to each student performer for various Pittsburgh based colleges/universities.  Information is available in the scholarship binder and website.  Deadline is January 31, 2018.  

The PA Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (PAFCS) will award one $500 scholarship for undergraduate education to a graduating high school senior who will be entering an approved college/university in the Fall pursuing a major in family and consumer sciences or a related specialized program.  Deadline for application is January 31, 2018.

SMILE SENIORS!  Is your winning smile a result of Good Orthodontics?  If you are a senior that is a present or past patient of Good Orthodontics, this opportunity of a $500 Smile Scholarship awaits you.  Take a bite out of those college expenses and check out the scholarship binder or the scholarship website for more information.  Deadline is February 1, 2018.

Seniors of the Jewish denomination who demonstrate financial need are invited to view the information on the Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service.  Deadline for this scholarship is February 12, 2018.  Applications are available online in late November.

The Vegetarian Resource Group each  year will award $20,000 in college scholarship money to graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted  vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities.  Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl.  One award of $10,000 and two awards of $5,000 each will be given. Deadline is February 20, 2018.

Seniors - The Simon Youth Community Scholarship Program is being offered to students  living in proximity of a Simon Property Mall or Community Center and are planning to enroll  in a full-time accredited two or four  year college, university or vocational -tech school. Students must apply online.   Deadline is March 1, 2018.   

The  American Foreign Service Association's National High School Essay contest is now open.   The winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize, an all expense paid two-day trip to Washington DC to meet a member of the State Department's leadership and a full tuition paid voyage with Semester at Sea.   The deadline is March 15, 2018.   

Seniors that are of Lutheran denomination - The William J. Wolf Memorial Scholarship Fund is now open. Students must apply online at  Deadline for this scholarship is March 31, 2018.

Seniors who plan to attend college or an accredited career or technical school are invited to review the information for the William C. Comptaro Educational Fund Scholarship.   Students must apply online at  The deadline is March 31st.

Seniors:  The Laura E. Elden Educational Trust  scholarship is now open.  Students must apply online at  Deadline for this scholarship is March 31st.   

The Allegheny County Fire Volunteer Education, Service & Training Scholarship Program (FireVest) will again be accepting applications for 200 full scholarships for an associate's degree or certificate program at CCAC.  Applicants must be a current member in good standing of an eligible volunteer fire company.  Annual application deadline is May 15 (spring) term.

The Epilepsy Foundation scholarship:  Seniors continuing their education at a post-secondary academic or vocational program after graduation that have a diagnosis of epilepsy or a seizure disorder are invited to visit the scholarship binder and website.  Application deadline is March 16, 2018.

The B. Davis Scholarship - This is a $1,000 scholarship for high school juniors and seniors.   Applicants must write an essay of less than 1,000 words on a specific topic.  The deadline is May 22, 2018.

The Aspiring Animation Professional Scholarship Program:  This $1,000 scholarship is for high school seniors who intend to pursue an animation related field at an accredited post-secondary school or college. The application deadline is June 1, 2018.

Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants are offering a $1,000 scholarship for an essay on the following topic:  Describe your educational career and life goals.  Explain your plan for achieving these goals.  Include your degree/major, why you selected it, and how this degree/major will help you achieve your goals.  Deadline is June 14, 2018.

Attention Senior Athletes!  The Big Sun Scholarship is offering a $500 scholarship to help young athletes in their academic pursuits.  The successful candidate must be a senior and currently involved in some sport.  Deadline is June 19, 2018.
