Meet the Staff

"Election Connection" was created by a group of University of Wisconsin-Madison reporting students in the UW School of Journalism & Mass Communication. Under the supervision of Professors Pat Hastings and Steve Walters, students explored all corners of the political spectrum, bringing stories on nationwide, statewide and campus-wide elections and the American political process to life through the site. Students worked throughout the fall and up until the presidential election to find the important stories of the exciting political season. 


Instructor:
Steven Walters has been a senior producer for WisconsinEye since 2009, covered Wisconsin's Capitol for the Milwaukee Sentinel and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel between 1988 and 2009. After covering the Iowa Legislature in the 1970s, he was managing editor of the Waukesha Freeman newspaper.
 
 


Lauren Anderson studies Journalism, history and African Studies and
hopes to pursue a career in public radio.
 
 

Ryan Blair is a senior majoring in Journalism and English. He hopes to
have a career writing for a magazine or journal focusing on electronics
or the humanities
 

Emily Connor is a Journalism and Political Science major graduating in
May 2013 and plans to work in print or broadcast media after graduation.



Hannah Curley is a senior from Cedarburg, Wis., graduating in May. She
is particularly interested in the non-profit industry and hopes to
pursue a career in public relations.



Ian Helms is double majoring in Spanish and Journalism with a
double-track in reporting and strategic communication. Given his current
knowledge and interest in the Hispanic culture, he is writing on those
issues for the 2012 election. He refuses to accept a future that doesn't
combine his two majors.



Noah Jarosh is graduating in May of 2013 with a degree in Journalism
with hopes of becoming a baseball writer.



Anna Johnson is a UW-Madison senior from Appleton, Wis. She looks
forward to a fast-paced brand management and client-based career after
graduation.



Liam Kane-Grade is majoring in Journalism and English with a creative
writing focus. He reports on municipal governments and the environment
for the Sauk Prairie Star and was the 2012 summer
editorial/communications intern for Wisconsin People & Ideas Magazine



Katie Klopf is from Sheboygan Fall, Wis., and majoring in Journalism.
She plans to graduate in May of 2013 and land a job either in
advertising or public relations or possibly writing for a beauty
magazine where she could also utilize her cosmetology license. She is a
public relations/social media media intern at the Foundation for
Madison's Public Schools and previously interned at Madison Marketing
Communication.



Ryan McGlynn was born and raised on the south side of Chicago. He will
graduate in May with degrees in Strategic Communications and Reporting. 



Steven Miller is a fifth-year senior, double tracking in Reporting and
Strategic Communications. An avid sports fan, he would like to use
his degree to dive into the worlds of sports marketing, PR, and even
sports reporting.



Muge Niu studies Journalism (reporting) and Economics. She is
from Shanghai, China. Topics that interest her include US-China
relations, communication and social entrepreneurship.
Muge is currently acting as co-webmaster for Election Connection.



Emily Rappleye is a junior at UW-Madison studying Journalism and
International Studies. She is from Barrington, Ill., and hopes to report
on foreign affairs for a major news publication someday. 


 

Amelia Rufer graduates in May with a degree in Reporting and experience
in promotions and marketing. Areas she is exploring include hyperlocal
reporting, political news and social media integration, utilizing
technology to create social change through neighborhood reporting and
promotions, and potential platforms/models to ease the digital divide.



Caroline Sage is a junior at UW-Madison studying Journalism, Political
Science and Arabic. On campus, Caroline is the stats editor for the
Badger Herald sports section. In the future, she hopes to travel to the
Middle East to study and write for Arab media outlets.



Adam Wolf is a senior from Hubertus, Wis., majoring in Journalism and
Communication Arts. He hopes to work as a freelance writer after
finishing college.
Hasting
 
Instructor:
Patricia Hastings is a Faculty Associate specializing in video journalism. Prior to that, Hastings worked in radio and television news in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Green Bay. She is the President of the Associated Press Wisconsin Broadcasters Association and serves on the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Education Committee.
 
 
 
 

Melissa Grau is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison double majoring in Journalism and Communication Arts.  She looks forward to travel after graduation and diving into the professional world of reporting.  

 

Alex DiTullio is a senior majoring in Journalism, Advertising and Political Science.  He hopes to go to law school after working as a journalist or for an advertising agency. Alex is from Madison, Wisconsin and also works as the Managing Editor at The Daily Cardinal.



Hannah Erdman is a senior double tracking in Strategic Communication and Reporting in the Journalism School. She is from Minnetrista, MN and will be working for Ameriprise Financial when she graduates this May.


Laura Howe is a senior majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication with an emphasis in strategic communication. Her dream career would be in product strategy development in New York City. Laura is from Mendham, NJ and currently works for Pfizer Inc. as a Communication Specialist.


Elliot Karp is a junior double majoring in Journalism and Communication Arts, while also receiving a certificate in Entrepreneurship. He is from Springfield, New Jersey and also hosts two talk shows at WSUM. He hopes to work in sports media.

Hannah Kotovic is a senior majoring in Strategic Communications. She is from Edina, Minnesota and would love to stay in the Midwest. She is graduating in May and hopes to do marketing and campaign planning.



Kaely Levy is a junior double tracking in reporting and public relations. She hopes to write for a fashion magazine. She is from Roslyn, New York and also writes for the Odyssey, the Greek Life newspaper.


Jade Likely s a senior journalism major from Stevens Point, Wis., hoping to move out to Washington, D.C. or New York City and pursue a career in strategic communications. Jade is currently acting as co-webmaster for Election Connection.



Matt Masterson is a fifth-year senior double majoring in Journalism and History. He hopes to write about sports for newspapers or a website. He is from Buffalo, New York and he is also the Sports Editor at The Daily Cardinal.




Makayla Mladenovic is a senior majoring in Journalism. She hopes to be a sports reporter in the broadcast field. She is from Southlake, Texas and was a sports anchor for a student newscast at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to the University of Wisconsin.


Nathan Palm is a junior majoring in journalism at UW-Madison. He is from Maple Grove, Minnesota and aspires to work in sports media. Nathan is currently a sports intern with WKOW 27 (ABC) and also works with 91.7 WSUM Madison Student Radio, the Big Ten Network and Bucky's 5th Quarter sports blog.

Rachel Schulze is a junior majoring in Journalism and pursuing a certificate in Educational Policy. She hopes to work in education communications. She is from Rockville, Md., and also is on the staff of The Daily Cardinal. 



Olivia Truby is a senior studying Journalism. She hopes to pursue a career in athletic communications. She is from Appleton, WI and interns for The Badger Sports Report.



Jocelyn Van Beek is a reporter at WSUM Madison student radio. She has a passion for performing and broadcast news. Ideally, she hopes someday to report for a network news station as well as pursue her dream of acting.



John Waters is a senior majoring in Journalism. He hopes to cover politics after graduation. He is from Kenosha, Wisconsin and currently writes for the Badger Herald.


Lesia Witkowsky was born and raised in Park Ridge, Illinois.  Her passion for journalism comes from a passion for writing, photography and travel.  Lesia is a senior double majoring in Journalism and International Studies and aspires to become an international photojournalist.


Sasha Hayman is a senior majoring in Journalism and Strategic Communication. During her time at UW-Madison, Sasha has written for the Badger Herald, hosted a radio show at WSUM and currently holds a position on the PRSSA board. This summer, she worked in the PR department at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium, which led her to realize her hopes of working in PR for other nonprofits in Chicago upon graduation. 



Meghan Sweeney is a senior majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication with an emphasis in reporting and strategic communication. She hopes to work in an advertising agency following graduation. She is from Hopkins, Minnesota.


Taylor Harvey, who hails from Freehold, NJ, is a senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison studying Journalism and History. An aspiring journalist, Harvey loves telling stories, especially those underrepresented in major media outlets. Harvey is the News Manager at the Daily Cardinal Student Newspaper, where she oversees eight news editors and manages daily news content and coverage. Harvey firmly believes in the power of writing, tea and a solid beach day at the Jersey Shore.


Caitlin Furin is a senior studying Journalism and Mass Communication. After graduation in May, she hopes to become a PR guru for an awesome organization or company.
