The Winnetka World Language Department has implemented a Teaching with Comprehensible Input (T/CI) model in our language classes.  The methodology of T/CI comes from the linguist Stephen Krashen who found that language acquisition is a unconscious process that happens when the learner is focused on the meaning of the message rather than how the language works.  In order to acquire a language students must be exposed to comprehensible input that is repetitive, interesting, and compelling.  To ensure that the language used in the classroom is comprehensible we limit the vocabulary to high-frequency words that are needed for fluency.  The students work together to create compelling stories that are focused around these high-frequency words  and then they act out and read these stories.
