What's Happening in the Learning Commons?

This week was a busy week in library class! Students in grades K-2 explored new maker building materials, 3rd graders learned about note taking, and 4th graders studied genres! An added bonus was having author Brad Meltzer visited with 1st grade and P.M. Kindergarten students to discuss his Ordinary People Change the World series!

Due to the construction of the new Romona Learning Commons this summer, the last day for students to check out library books is May 5th. All library books will be due back to the library no later than May 12th. Thank you for your help getting books and materials returned to the library in a timely manner!

The Scholastic Book Fair visits the Romona Library!

The Romona PTA is proud to sponsor the spring Scholastic Spring Book Fair! The theme this year is “S’more fun with books!” 

When: Monday, April 17 - Friday, April 21 
Where: Romona Library Classroom 
Hours: Monday - Wednesday 9:00 - 3:00 
During conferences the book fair will be open:
Thursday 9:00 - 7:30 and Friday 8:30 - 2:00

(All profits are used for books to enhance student learning at Romona)
Additional Information: 
  • ONLY BOOKS will be for sale 
  • An 9% sales tax will be added to the total cost of books 
  • Adults may use credit cards 
  • Cash or checks written to Romona PTA accepted

Open Library and Technology Night!

Smart Grid visits Romona

This week Smart Grid for Schools visited the Romona Library. Smart Grid is a traveling exhibit funded by the Illinois Science and Energy Innovation Foundation and operated by Illinois State University. Romona 4th grade students are currently studying electricity and through the exhibit they had the opportunity to learn about Smart Grid technology and experienced electricity firsthand. In addition, the Romona PTA sponsored an Open Library and Technology Night. Several 4th grade students were leaders and guided younger students and their families through the exhibits.


Jan Brett Author Visit Contest

Renowned children's author and illustrator, Jan Brett is holding a contest for a free school visit. Romona needs your help! Complete this brief form to place your vote for Romona School (one vote per email address). If possible, we would love your help spreading the word on social media! Last year's winning school had 8646 votes!

Romona Book Week Highlights

A HUGE thank you to the PTA for bringing Caldecott award winning illustrator, Paul O. Zelinsky to Romona and helping to make Book Week 2016 a success! During Paul's presentations, students learned about the role of an illustrator and how different styles of illustration can impact a story. Additionally, Paul discussed the process it takes to get a book published and he demonstrated his amazing drawing skills!

All week students had fun showing off their Romona Spirit!





Romona Book Week!

Next week is Romona Book Week and many fun activities have been planned for students to help foster a love of reading! On Monday, to kick off Book Week, Caldecott award winning author and illustrator Paul O. Zelinsky will be visiting Romona. Students have been preparing for his visit by reading his books in library class and learning how to draw, Moose, one of his characters from the book, Z is for Moose.

Tuesday: Reading is Everywhere

·     Wear a shirt with words

Wednesday: Team Up with a Good Book

Thursday: Dress as a Character

·     Dress up as your favorite book character

Friday: Romona Reads

·     Wear PJs to school and bring a blanket, pillow, OR stuffed animal to read with during silent reading
