WFCS First Grade Busy Bees!!

It is a joy to watch the children grow and blossom socially; emotionally and academically throughout the year.

Children enter first grade at various levels of development in reading. The children are taught basic reading skills and concepts as a whole group, however, flexible grouping during our literacy stations allow me to give remedial help and enrichment activities to meet the learning needs of each child. Writing is also a process that develops throughout the year. "Kid Writing" is encouraged for beginner writers, then the children's writing skills progress through journal writing and formal writing projects where they learn to edit and revise their stories.

First Grade math concepts include addition and subtraction facts to 20, geometry and fractions, telling time to the hour and half-hour, skip counting, place value, and graphing. These concepts are introduced through concrete hands-on activities then move on to solving problems on workbook pages. Strategies and techniques for mental math are also introduced. Skills and concepts are reinforced during "Math Stations" where children work independently; with a partner; or with the teacher for remediation or enrichment.

Science and Social Studies Units are taught throughout the year, as I try to integrate these units with the reading themes from the reading curriculum.

Journey's with God is the formal Bible curriculum used in first grade. However, I try to integrate God's Truths and Word in all learning areas.

First Grade is a big year to also work on social skills. We learn to love and serve one another as God commands. We learn how to handle our emotions appropriately and to use strategies and discussions to work through any problems.

As you can see, we are "Busy Bees" in first grade!!
