Who works in the LRC?
Mrs. Rodko is our Librarian. Mrs. Haven is our Library Aide. We also are lucky to have many parent volunteers. Students also help.
How can I contact the LRC?
Please call 203-221-6310. If we do not answer the phone during the school day, we are probably working with a class. Please leave a message.
You can also email sharonrodko@westonps.org or susanhaven@westonps.org
What does LRC stand for?
The LRC is our Learning and Resource Center.
How often do students go to the LRC?
Classes visit the LRC once a week for a 30 minute lesson. They come another time for a 15 minute book exchange. Additional times will be scheduled for lessons and activities that are integrated with the classroom curriculum. ELC students borrow books during weekly storytime.
What resources can students check out?
Students can check out picture books, chapter books, biographies, non-fiction books and magazines.
Are there other resources available?
We have digital resources available including e-books and databases. They are password protected. Visit the HES ONLINE RESOURCES page. Login with your Weston student account to ClassLInk to access the list of usernames and passwords.
How many books can a student check out?
There are different guidelines for each grade level. All books and magazines are checked out for two weeks.
ELC students borrow one book each week.
K-2 students can borrow 2 books per week for a total of 6 books checked out.
Can a book be renewed?
Most books can be renewed. One exception may be if there is a long waiting list for a title or books in a series. In order to renew a book, a student must bring it to the LRC.
Can my child place a hold on a book?
Students can place a hold on a book while in the LRC. When the book become available, we will hold it for the student until they come for book exchange.
What happens if a student reaches the maximum checkouts or has an overdue book?
If students reach the maximum number of checkouts or have two overdue books, they will be asked to return books before checking any others out. We will hold a book they are interested in at the Circulation Desk until the necessary books are returned.
What happens if my child loses an LRC book or magazine or it becomes damaged?
There is a replacement fee for lost or damaged books. The cost includes purchasing a library bound book and processing costs. Please call for replacement costs. A book will stay on a child's record until it is returned or replacement costs are paid. Refunds can be issued for found materials returned within three months of the payment date. Please contact the LRC if you have any questions or concerns.
How will I know if my child has overdue books?
Overdue notices are emailed weekly on Fridays.
Can I volunteer in the LRC?
Yes! Our volunteers are a vital part of our program. You can volunteer on a regular basis and help with check in and check out. You can also help out when we have special projects. We have a volunteer orientation at the beginning of the year, but on the job training is always available. The regular book exchange schedule is currently being established. Our LRC coordinator will reach out when we are ready for volunteers.
How can I help my child find a "just right" reading book?
A "just right" reading book is one that students can read independently. Students can use the five finger rule. If there are five or more words on a page that a student doesn't know that book may not be "just right." Remember, there are different reasons for selecting a book: to read independently, to be read to, to browse pictures in a book on a topic of interest, etc.
