Manaia Williams Te Meihana Williams

I hope that everyone enjoyed the holiday break?

We have certainly started back to a much cooler term so don’t forget layers to cater for inside and outside learning and of course to make sure all items of clothes are named.

Thank you very much to Home and School for supporting the Life Education Bus that has been here at school this week. It is great that all students have benefited from this resource and they have enjoyed working with Maria and Harold.

Our value for this term is curiosity.

Curiosity is something that I hope can be inspired, fostered and maintained in the lives of our children. They say that we are all born with the desire to be curious. It helps us learn, develop and grow as thinking and participating citizens in our local and wider community. If we accept that curiosity rises and falls throughout our lives then we know as educators and parents that we play an important role in helping our children to develop a curious mind. The desire to explore as babies and young children grows into the desire to inquire. Weston School actively promotes inquiry as you know and teachers build on children’s curiosity, adapting their programmes as children show an interest that can be developed and encouraged. Curious children ask a lot of questions...which is actually quite a sophisticated mental process. Questions are encouraged at school and we hope you can support this value by practising asking questions with your children. I wonder why...? How do you think...? How could we find out...? What would happen if...? The best way we can foster our children’s curiosity is to stay curious ourselves...that way our children get a great headstart in life!

This term the school is scheduled for an Education Review Office audit of student achievement in week three. We will be welcoming Janet Pereira and Rachel Davis from 16-18th May.

Keep an eye out for...

Please look out for a summary of our Charter that will come home today. We have tried to create an information sheet that shares with you our focus and plans for each year. The Board approves our Charter and Annual Plan and this goes to the Ministry at the beginning of March. We hope that it explains what we are doing clearly and without too much edu-speak?! I welcome your feedback. The Board of Trustees will send a letter home next Friday sharing what our property plans are which are due to start this term. Also today there will be a Health and PE survey in your child’s bag. Please return to the office.Thank you very much to those of you who took the time to fill out our survey at the end of last term it helps us to further develop our school. Remember you are always welcome to make a time to see me to discuss your child or school ideas or come along to our Home and School Meetings where I always give an update on what our plans are.

Waitaki Newcomers Network -

With the growing numbers of migrants arriving in our community we have set up a new group to provide support and information. It is essential that these people are reached out to, as settling in a new country is particularly challenging. Therefore I would really appreciate if you could put this notice in your newsletter, in the hope that migrants will come along. The group will meet fortnightly.  Please also feel free to refer all new families to the service, regardless of whether they are from another part of NZ or from overseas.

Migrants Meet and Share. Thursday 11 May at 10.30am in the Green Room at the Opera House. Come along to this newly established group, where you can meet other migrants and enjoy a free morning tea and a chat. RSVP to Maria on 0210665143.

Plus , Newcomers Network. New to town? Want to make some friends and join in with our varied activities? Contact Christine on 0272428643.
