Term 4, Week 5, 2016

Talofa lava, Kia orana, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa, hello and welcome to our weekly news blog...

Message from the Principal

What a fantastic community we have! Thank you so much for everyone’s participation and support at our Fireworks night - our children will benefit hugely from the money raised! It really was a spectacular evening with fantastic organisation, food, activities and of course the fireworks were explosive - literally!

You will see from the photos below - our children are enjoying the outdoors and all the sporting activities there are on offer at Weston School. A special mention goes to Youth Town - the children love spending time with the facilitators and enjoy experiencing new and exciting sporting opportunities with you.

Linda has been working her magic in the school garden along with many other Weston students and it is looking fabulous so make sure you take a peek!

Our athletics events were certainly one of the highlights of our week and we felt very grateful for the good weather on the day. Enjoy the many photos below!

Genevieve Behrent’s visit was another highlight for our school. As an ex Weston student and a silver medal winner in the Rio Olympics, we felt very proud to have her come and present at a special assembly. Our school haka, which included students from Years 4-8 was powerful and both Genevieve and her Grandfather Dick Behrent, were delighted and impressed by it. The children loved being able to hold the silver medal, (which was very heavy), ask questions and find out lots of interesting information about the Olympic village, the challenges faced by the olympians as well as the excitement of meeting so many sports people. This will be a memorable event for many students - I wonder who our next Olympian will be?

We are a sunsmart school, so please ensure your child has a Weston School bucket hat at school and remember to apply sunscreen on those hot days … the ones we are all waiting for!

Have an enjoyable weekend with your families.

Sports Activator

Weston School is the lead school for the Sports Activator programme for North Otago Primary Schools.  The Sports Activator programme is funded through Kiwisport via Sport Otago and school funding.  It is facilitated by Youthtown.  Students of every age have participated in this programme.  As you can see below the children have participated in Archery and many other games and activities. A brilliant opportunity for all students.  The programme promotes equity and provides ongoing professional development for teachers.  We are currently applying for grant funding to continue this programme in 2017.
