Message from the Principal

Teaching Staff for 2017

It is a great pleasure to announce our staff for next year!  We welcome Matthew Hannagan as our new permanent staff member. We will also keep Sammy Macdonald on our team and look forward to working with Rebecca May, our only new face in 2017. Rebecca comes from Cromwell Primary and is an Oamaruvian completing her education here.

Which leads us to classes for 2017. We are currently working on class lists and any parents of children requiring a transition programme will be informed soon in preparation for transition meetings.

In terms of teachers and classes, there are just a few changes.

Although we are just in the draft stages of putting classes together, at present they will look like this:

Sammy Macdonald

Kowhai/Room 1

Nicole Boys

Kauri/Room 2

Jenny Kitchin

Tuatara/Room 3

Sara Brown

Tauhou/Room 4

Carolyn Thelning and Jo Mortimer

Learning Centre

Korora and Tuis

Rebecca May

Kea/Room 7

Gary Paterson

Kohuhu/Room 8

Matt Hannagan

Nga Kau Taki/Room 9

Caron Sullivan and Sarah Plunket

Ruma Rahi/Room 10

Next year we are aiming for more Modern Learning Environments (MLE’s) and Rooms 1-3 will undergo a transformation similar to our senior block. Carolyn Thelning and Jo Mortimer will teach collaboratively in 2017 in our Learning Centre and this will allow for renovations to take place more easily in the Junior area.

Next year we will use Room 6 as our Library.

We will put class lists up on Tuesday 24th January. Parents and students are welcome to come to school on Friday 27th January between 2 and 3 pm to meet their teacher and check out their classroom learning environment.

Thanks so much to such a dedicated team in setting up and getting ready for one of the highlights on the Oamaru calendar! Also we hugely appreciate how many of you get behind this fun filled family evening. See you there!

Kids are precious!

Please consider the following message as an earnest plea from Child Youth and Family. We need to become a nation of people who care about all children and see ourselves as protecting everyone of them.

Could you give a local child in foster care a happy Christmas?

Child Youth and Family are looking for people who are interested in being foster caregivers for our community’s most vulnerable children. Please contact the local office 03 9042700 or the caregiver social worker Kaye Francis 029 243 7535.

Nga mihi nui

Quarrymans Cottage Visits

Some of our junior school classes have enjoyed visiting the Quarrymans Cottage in Weston and the old Quarry area.  The children have found it interesting to learn something about Weston's History.  Thank you to Ainsley Mitchell who conducted the visits and gave the children insight into what it may have been like when the Cottage and Quarry was used.

Some of Sophie Rohrbachs excerpts from the trip to the Quarrymans Cottage.

The Surprise trip

"Everyone lining up" said Mr Hannagan on that hot, sunny day as we slipped into high-viz vests and started walking out the school gates.

Where are we going....I think to myself as we keep walking further away from School, then suddenly we stop at a sign saying 'Quarrymans Cottage'! I look left and see an old limestone cottage, not much bigger than my room. Next to it there is a lady, she is the one who looks after the cottage and her name is Ainsley. The cottage that Ainsley looks after was built along time ago I think 1880 or 1870 but she is not sure.

Next when we were inside Ainsley told us more about the fascinating cottage. "In 1901 this cottage was bought by a man named Joseph Kelly. He lived in it with John Robertson" I heard Ainsley saying. "When Joseph’s 5 children and his wife came it got too small so they took out some blocks in the wall and replaced them with doors.’’

Then we walked to the Quarry.  When we were there we saw the huge wall of limestone!  I wonder how the quarry used to look before they dug out all that stone?  Would it of been hard with no machinery?
