Term 3, Week 5, 2016

Talofa lava, Kia orana, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa, hello and welcome to our weekly news blog...

Message from the Acting Principal

Determination, perseverance, commitment and dedication were just some of the attributes we saw  from our students at our Weston and  North Otago Cross Country competitions! Surely the Olympic success has rubbed off on everyone!

Enjoy the photos below!

We are fortunate to be a registered ANZ Olympic School. As a registered school we receive loyalty points when parent and teacher networks chose ANZ for their next home or business loan. Last week Andrea Armstrong from the ANZ presented 2 laptops to the school which were purchased using these points. The ANZ have also provided the school with achievement badges, medals, certificates and inspirational posters which epitomises the values required to be an Olympian. So a big THANKYOU to ANZ and to the people who drew down loans and nominated our school in the process. We look forward to an ongoing partnership.

It was a privilege to be able to award the ANZ medals and have our own medal ceremony at our last Assembly. Three deserving students, Nirvana Ruddle, Cade Flett and Harry King get to keep their medal for a week!

Paid Union Meeting

You many have heard in the media about the Ministry's proposed changes to school funding. This Global Funding' proposal will dramatically change the way schools are funded and the PPTA (Post Primary Teachers Association ) and NZEI (New Zealand Educational Institute) have called a Paid Union Meeting to debate the issues contained within the proposal.

  • Paid Union Meeting for Teachers & Principals: 8th September 9am

We understand that this may be an inconvenience to families, but it is very important that staff and Principals attend this meeting to find out what implications could be in store for your children.

  • Weston School will be open for instruction from 11am on September 8th

For children who cannot be supervised off site during this time, there will be a limited number staff at school who will be available to run an alternative programme.

We appreciate your understanding and support with this matter.

A warm welcome back to our Principal Mrs Nicky Ryan who returns next week. She has completed part of her sabbatical this term and we look forward to her return - I know she has missed Weston School!!

Science Fair

We have had a huge focus on Science recently, especially with our senior students completing their Science Fair entries. This is a huge undertaking and some students are shining - using their key competency skills of managing self, thinking, participating, relating to others, and using language, symbols and text. Thank you family and whanau for supporting your children with their efforts. Entries are on display in the Learning Centre, Monday to Wednesday next week.  However, on Tuesday from 2-3pm parents are invited and the children will be standing by their exhibits explaining what their investigations have been about.  This is a celebration of the children's Science inquiries at Weston School.

Jonty Watson works on his project.

Gentle reminders

Bus Stop

We ask that parents and caregivers DO NOT PARK on the bus stop area between the hours of 8.45-9am and 2.45-3pm.

Medications for Students

We would just like to remind parents that if your child is on any type of medication including panadol tablets they must be brought to school by the parent/caregiver so that the medicines can be signed in by a staff member and a medication administration form can be completed.  Thank you.

Nga mihi

Weston Cross Country

Thankfully the rain held off for our Weston School Cross Country this year, held at the Weston Domain on Friday the 12th of August . Children wore their house colours with pride. They showed perseverance, determination and commitment training hard for this event.  It was great to see so many parents, family and whanau out supporting the children.  Thanks to all of the fabulous people who helped with the Cross Country.  We appreciate your assistance.
