Term 2, Week 3, 2016

Talofa lava, Kia orana, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa, hello and welcome to our weekly news blog...

Message from the Principal

Welcome Sheree Kennedy to the Weston School Team! Sheree will join us full time in Nga  Kau Taki class (R9) from Week 5. We would like to thank Sarah Plunket for stepping up to support the class for four weeks leading up to the change over. Sarah will continue to work with the seniors on Thursdays and also work in other classes on Fridays.

We also have a student teacher working in Tui class at the moment and we are delighted to be able to work with Kathy Holyoake. We hope she enjoys her time with us!

So encouraging to read such wonderful stories from students across the school these last couple of weeks. It has been especially nice to have some boys from Mr Paterson’s class today with their tongue in cheek stories about selective hearing. Amazing how many times they referred to selective hearing when Mum was talking but very funny to read and enjoy! I throw out the challenge to all Dad’s to model keen listening skills towards their wives!!! ;) ;) ;)

Quotes from Year 6 writing:  ..‘You only hear what you want to hear.’

‘Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep!’,The alarm is off. It goes up the hill around the bend and into Lily’s ears. I drown into my pillow.

When I’m in the swimming pool my grandad points to the changing room….but I just wave back. Then he points again … I do a dance move and get to stay in longer because he doesn’t get angry.

Olivia Mavor  Y6

On Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday I rock out to beats …… and go back to not listening to my parents.

Jonty Watson Y5

The beast, my mum, was shouting “LLLOOOYYYDDD!!!” fiercely like a red hot fire breathing dragon. (Lloyd’s mum was prepared to take a ‘hit’ on this in the interest of her son’s education!)

Medication in children’s bags - just a reminder that for health and safety reasons any medication your child is prescribed needs to come to the office. Office staff will make sure the required amount is given out and returned home.

Kia Kaha (Stand Strong) Programme. This is a

NZ Police Education Programme which will involve a visit to each class from Carrie Hamilton, our Community Constable. We welcome parent involvement in these programmes as well.

Today was International Pink Shirt Day which supports and celebrates no bullying!

Thanks to those of you that participated including teachers! We really liked Mr Hannagan’s pink cardi...and Mr Paterson’s pink earrings (he is holding them). Bullying is not okay and our unit on Kia Kaha is also sending out that message!

Jump Rope for Heart begins on 13 June - so you might like to get your children skipping at home in preparation. There will be lots of opportunities for skipping at school this term too.

Nga mihi

What’s been happening at Weston School

Filmmakers in Schools

The Filmmakers in Schools group has been all ‘action’ so to speak! Just a touch of editing and it is all done.   Last week some of the more special actors performing made an appearance at school.  Students enjoyed mingling with them!

NZ Playhouse

On Wednesday 18th May the children were lucky to see The Fairest of Them All with the NZ Playhouse and again with no cost to students as this is paid for by Home and School.

Thanks Home and School!  It was another amazing performance.

Top Flite Fund-raiser

I need your help with Top flite labels Sunday 22nd May 9am sharp.  There will be around 13,000 labels to do.  It should be a morning’s work with 15 people.  Morning tea provided and easy work while you have a chat to the people around you.  A great way to get to know other parents in our school.  It has been getting really hard to get people along and if it continues we will be forced to pass this easy fundraiser along.  It would mean we would need to sell raffles instead.  Please support this as it has brought so many things for all our children to enjoy.  Hope to see you there
