Term 2, Week 1, 2015

Talofa lava, Kia orana, Taloha ni, Ni sa bula vinaka, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Talofa, Malo e lelei, Tena koutou, Tena koutou, Tena koutou katoa, hello and welcome to our fortnightly news blog…

Message from the Principal

Welcome back

We have had a lovely start to the term with Harold and Richard visiting from Life Education Trust as well as our ANZAC celebrations to begin another action packed term. If you are new to Weston we wish you a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your time at our school.

For those families that remember Nicole McGregor it is a pleasure to have her back working in Tui class doing the Reading Recovery release for Mrs Thelning. Miss McGregor will also work in Kowhai class with Mrs Brown to support our growing numbers.

We had a special ANZAC assembly at the Weston Church yesterday.  To me this is always a heartwarming experience. It is made special as well by sharing links with other schools as Head Boy of Waitaki Boys’ High School piped us into Weston Church and also played the Piper’s Lament at the end of our service. The Year 8’s did a stunning job with their historical review and poems to add to the ceremony. Thanks to the Weston Church and Rev. Nancy Parker as well as a school and church support team of dozens!

We also had our first Field of Remembrance Ceremony to celebrate 100 years which was also special and I hope habit forming.

It was great to see our Year 8’s ushering and handing out programmes for both the Dawn Service and at the Garden Of Memories. It was extremely special to hear Andrew Sinclair recite the Ode at the 11.00 am service and while John Longman worried that this might offend I believe it is a special way to share in both the past and the future with our children. They will be the caretakers of what is to come, making this very important to have both understanding and involvement.

Travelling Safely to School

There are quite a few of our students who are biking to school at the moment. As the NZ Police do not recommend or endorse children under 10 biking unsupervised we need to know that our younger children are supervised by adults and we will provide a vest or bag cover to make sure tamariki can be seen. It seems there are many younger children biking at the moment and we are worried about safety on our roads.

Please find link below for our Road Safety and Transport Procedure

Bible in Schools

A survey was sent home last term asking if you wished to have your children involved in the BIS programme to inform the school and the Board of Trustees in our planning.  Bible will still be offered in terms two and three for interested families and starting this week.  Some families a reminder to please return your survey form if you have not already done so that we can make sure that your child is correctly catered for. The curriculum programme for this class can be viewed at the office Thank you.

Life Education

Life Education Trust have joined us this week.  Students have been enjoying the informative and interesting lessons offered by Life Education with a health focus. Thank you to those parents who attended the Parents Session on Friday.

We will undertake this programme next year again in term two.

Extra Curricular Aspects of our Programmes

This is to inform you as parents that this term we will be offering two shows for our students. One is from NZ Playhouse and the other is a Ukelele Show and workshop. These are extra to the usual school programme and parents will be invoiced before these events. If you do not wish to pay for these extra activities as they are optional the school will cater for the students not attending. This year the school has elected to support families by funding Life Education Trust to keep costs down for families. We are expecting a cost of $8-10 for both activities.

Nga mihi
