Alice was one of the five members of the Oamaru Swim Club’s team that competed at the New Zealand National Junior Championships in Wellington from Friday 20 – Sunday 22 February, 2015. This is the second year that Alice and Iessha have qualified and competed. Along with Penny Keeling, Iessha Mansfield and Abbey Wilson, Alice raced in  the 11 Year Old Girls section with Micah Hayes in the Boys 12 Years section. Their coach, Narcis Gherca also attended.  Alice’s main strokes are butterfly and freestyle but she has always enjoyed backstroke and the Medleys.

which was Session 3, Sunday morning.

Alice competed in the following events:

                50m Butterfly, 100m Butterfly, 200m Butterfly, 100m Backstroke, 50m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley

She gained personal best times in four of the events with the biggest improvement of 5.05 seconds in her 200m Freestyle. Alice’s best results was in her first swim of the meet – the 100m Butterfly which was on the Friday evening. Alice did a time improvement of 3.48 seconds and gained sixth place.  All of the Oamaru swimmers performed very strongly with a high percentage of  great personal best times and some swims being very close to medals.  As Alice had a top ten result, she has been invited, along with Penny, Iessha and Micah, to attend a Swim New Zealand Development camp which is to be held over three days in June.  What Alice liked best about the Juniors was the chance to be there and to watch swimmers from all over New Zealand. She hopes to make it back there next year and do even better.
