MASTERPIECE (THE MUSICAL)

Imagine being able to magically enter a painting and explore it from the inside, or even bring a character from a work of art to life. And if given the choice, would you live in an ordered and predictable, black-and-white world, or a chaotic but colorful world full of adventure and risk. This year, Westwood Drama proudly presents a brand new musical called Masterpiece. Created especially for Westwood students, this is a story of mystery, magic, surprises, and of course lots of great songs! Auditions will be held next Tuesday after school with callbacks being on Wednesday.  2nd through 5th graders, please look for a sheet coming home today telling you when and how to audition and where you can find the drama forms. We hope you will be part of Westwood’s 20th production with Mr. Reich, Masterpiece the Musical!

MASTERPIECE (THE MUSICAL): SHORT SUMMARY

Twins Iris and Arcus live in a city called Verdia with their parents, who own a bookstore. Although they are opposites, Iris and Arcus are best friends. Verdia is a colorful, chaotic, zany town filled with a crazy assortment of people and places. Some even say it is magical. But a new resident has moved in named Mr. O’Monotony. Rich and persnickety, Mr. O is a shrewd businessman who values order and uniformity. He begins making changes to Verdia the minute he arrives.

During a vacation at their grandparents house in the country, Iris and Arcus discover a special paintbrush hidden their grandmother’s studio. When they both accidentally touch the brush to a still-wet painting, they are immediately transported inside the artwork. Subjects in the paintings come to life including Muse and Block, creative guides who show them around. Later, Iris and Arcus learn that this strange magic allows them not only to enter paintings, but to draw subjects out of them as well.

Back in Verdia, Mr. O has taken over most of the businesses, including the bookstore. Angry and concerned for the future of their city, Iris and Arcus take matters into their own hands. With the help of the brush and a cast of special characters, Iris and Arcus attempt to defeat Mr. O and his cronies. But crazy twists introduce new surprises. The fate of Verdia lies in someone’s hands, but who in the end will control its destiny?

WESTWOOD DRAMA 2018/19

ACADEMIC, BEHAVIOR AND COMMITMENT TERM AGREEMENT

A high standard of academics, behavior and commitment is required of all participants who wish to be involved in Westwood Drama.

ACADEMICS

All teachers have been instructed to notify Mr. Reich of any drama student who falls behind in their academic progress during play season. This includes a decline in grades, missing homework assignments, and being overly tired in class. Any child with three occurrences of academic decline may be dismissed from the play.  Students typically have sufficient gaps between active rehearsal time to complete their homework, but please confirm each evening that homework was completed.

BEHAVIOR

We uphold the district policy on defined behavior expectations. These guidelines are to be followed by all students participating in the play. Records will be kept at rehearsals and students who are in repeated violation of the guidelines are subject to dismissal from the play. Determination of dismissal will be based on a three-strike policy. Any violation (to be determined by the rehearsal monitors) would be brought to the attention of Mr. Reich, who will determine if the violation constitutes a strike. Any student having three strikes against them may be dismissed from the play.

The behavior guidelines are as follows:

  • Keep your hands to yourself

  • No running or horseplay

  • Use quiet voices

  • Be respectful of others

  • Follow directions given by monitors/play personnel

If a student makes poor behavior choices that impede smooth production of the musical, they may be asked to discontinue his/her involvement in the play.

COMMITMENT

In order to obtain our goal of a quality production, all participants must be dedicated to that goal. The two weeks immediately preceding the show will be especially important as we will be pulling it all together at that time. Every cast member will be provided with a rehearsal schedule and is expected to be at each scheduled rehearsal, unless ill. Three unexcused absences may result in dismissal from the play.

PICK UP POLICY

Students should be aware of who is picking them up from rehearsals, and pickups must be made on time.  The adults involved with this production have other responsibilities that follow rehearsals. Late pickups create problems for others, as they cannot honor their commitments. Because of this, the policy will be that after two late pick-ups your child may be dismissed from the play..
