Osteopathic Medicine (DO) - Pomona

February 2013

The DO class of 2016 had an exciting February; the end of IDIT and the beginning of our first “real” taste of medical school with, Blood and Lymph, our first systems class.  The change in learning style has been a welcome change for many as we are working a lot more with differential diagnoses and deductive reasoning, than with pure memorization.  Also – students have already fallen head over heels for Pathoma and Dr. Sattar.  On that note, we all would like to give a big thank you to WesternU for obtaining a group discount on Pathoma and for getting us started on Kaplan high yield videos!  We feel very lucky and privileged to get these resources and will most definitely take advantage of them and make WesternU proud!

In other news, the DO 2016 SGA coordinated a secret Valentines Day card exchange and also continued selling tickets for the end of the year banquet.  We also held an open forum for next year’s SGA positions.  We also completed the selection process for the Intercampus Exchange program with Lebanon and look forward to hosting our counterparts from the Great Pacific Northwest down here in Southern California soon!  Finally, our great Student Affairs team and SGA pulled off a very successful dodgeball tournament tonight!  It was a great break on a Friday night, and c’mon who doesn’t like to dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge!

Class of 2015

The DO class of 2015 dived right into a busy second semester with the start of our reproductive course. As we are only a few days from our repro final, it seems that this final semester of our pre-clinical years is flying by! After the repro system, we will have cranial week and then begin GI. This semester will provide the additional challenge of balancing our coursework with reviewing materials for the national board exams we will be taking in less than five months. Shortly thereafter, most of us will begin our first rotations as third year medical students. It’s incredible to imagine that we are almost halfway through this journey!

We did manage to sneak in some fun this month as well. We welcomed our colleagues from the Lebanon campus who spent a week in Pomona through the intercampus exchange program. It was great meeting them and showing them around our campus and Southern California!

Class of 2016

It’s crazy to think that just 3 short weeks ago we were on break!  Since then, our med school plate has been full with IDIT, ECM focused patient encounters, and HVLA and counterstrain techniques in OMM.  It’s nice to get back into the swing of the things, but I am sure many have Presidents day holiday weekend circled on their calendars!

This month has also seen many OMS1s stepping up and taking the baton from previous club executive board members.   Luckily, we’ve had such great leaders to teach us how to run a club and balance extracurricular activities with school (see Pipeline picture below).

In other news, many folks have been putting in extra study hours so they can enjoy Superbowl Sunday, as California’s very own 49’ers will be trying to earn the Lombardy Trophy!

Picture 1: Pictured above are various members of the DO 2016 and 2015 class involved in the Pipeline organization.  Also pictured are members of the Pomona fire department and EMT team as well as students from elementary through high school who participate in the Pipeline program.
