Dear Westbrook athletic and activity families,

On Wednesday January 20, 2021, the Maine Principals Association met with the Maine Department of Education to request a change in the restrictions to athletics and activities due to a county’s COVID color coding designation. The outcome of that meeting was as follows: “After meeting with the state health and education agencies, a change has been made regarding the color coding currently being used by schools.  The color coding system will be used as advisory to in-person learning but will no longer apply to school-based activities.  If it is deemed safe to do so by the local administration, teams may begin practicing, following the established sport-specific return to play guidelines.”

Cumberland County is currently coded as yellow.

Similar to other schools in Cumberland County, Westbrook High School will resume practices on Monday January 25, 2021. The intent is to return to activity as safely and cautiously as possible. Athletics and activities are important to the health and emotional well-being of our students and we value their role in our students’ lives. However, our intent is to provide a safe return to athletics that is aligned with our on-going safety guidelines. Although it is unclear what will come of any potential competitions this year, we will locally reevaluate the situation in two weeks to determine next steps.

Our Return to Athletics plan is as follows:

  • Basketball, Cheering, Conditioning (run by the Track and Field coaches,) and Swimming will be the only sports operating at this time.

  • Athletes will practice within their school-day (A day / B day) cohorts which have been successful in limiting the spread of COVID.) Athletes will only practice during their assigned cohort day and time. (A,B, A1, A2, B1, B2)

  • Coaches will notify athletes of their cohort but the letter identification is synonymous with their school day cohort day. Only students are allowed at practice and only during their scheduled practice time.

  • Face coverings MUST be worn at all times.

  • Students must conduct symptoms screening before coming to practice.

  • Proper hand washing and sanitizing practices must be followed.

  • Athletes must bring and use their own water bottle.

  • No locker rooms will be available; athletes must come prepared for the activity.

  • There will be no access to any other part of the building outside of practice.

  • The facility and equipment will be thoroughly sanitized between practices.

  • There will be no school-sponsored team gatherings outside of practice.

  • If Westbrook High School is fully remote, practices will be cancelled.

  • If there is a positive COVID case connected to a team, practices will be cancelled.

The Athletic Department and Westbrook Schools are excited about this opportunity and we are excited to see everyone back in action.

Sincerely,

Blair Marelli

2020 Fall Sports SMAA Spectator Announcement

Southwestern Maine Activities AssociationSMAA Torch Edit.pdfSMAA Torch Edit.pdf

On September 10, 2020, the Southwestern Maine Activities Association’s Athletic Administrators voted to be in compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order regarding indoor and outdoor gathering limits. As a result of this Executive Order, the SMAA member schools will have no spectators for any Fall, 2020 events /games. As an Association, we realize this measure is very different from years past in all of our communities, but the health and safety of our student athletes, coaches, officials, game personnel and community at large are, and will continue to be, our top priority as we navigate through return to play.

******UPDATE 08/20/20******

Southwestern Maine Activities Association

“For Immediate Release - Thursday, August 20, 2020”: Southwestern Maine Activities Association postpones in-person interscholastic athletics until Tuesday, September 8, 2020

On Wednesday, August 19, 2020, the Cumberland and York County superintendents voted to delay in-person interscholastic athletics to a date no sooner than Tuesday, September 8.  This date represents the official start date the MPA announced in July.  We are awaiting word from the MPA on the status of the Fall Sports Season and what that may look like.  SMAA schools cannot risk a further delay to the start of the school year by holding athletic programming on school grounds for two weeks prior to the start of school (MPA Phase 4 summer conditioning program).  By delaying until September 8th, SMAA schools can focus on starting the school year and open schools without the fear of on campus transmission occurring  through our own sports programs prior to that.

With MPA guidance due to arrive next week, SMAA schools will be able to determine next steps regarding the fall sports season with a full understanding of what the season will look like.  This will allow the association and its member schools an opportunity to develop a comprehensive plan for interscholastic athletics that may have reduced or canceled interscholastic seasons.
