Announcements

  • Week of Sept. 25-29
This week we will focus on our District Interim 1 reading test.  We will spend one of our class periods on Monday and Tuesday getting that done.  In addition, we will be reading more articles and narratives on the Civil War in order to practice identifying the central idea of a text and learn new academic vocabulary.

On Wednesday we will learn new Greek roots and affixes.  We will have a bellwork quiz on Friday which will include demonstrating mastery of creating compound and complex sentences.  Also on Friday, we will have 20 minutes of SSR (sustained silent reading), so each student needs to have a book to read during that time.

  • Week of Sept. 5-8, 2017
This week we will begin a new short story, "Seventh Grade," by Gary Soto.  Students will learn new vocabulary, identify elements of plot, make inferences about what is happening in the story, and then take a quiz next week. In addition, we will have a quiz on Greek List #2 on Wednesday, Sept. 6.

Students should be studying their Greek roots and affixes at home, as well as reading 20 minutes a day.

  • Greek Roots and Affixes
Last Wednesday, students learned several Greek roots and affixes.  We took notes together in class and students had a two-sided worksheet on micro- and macro- roots and affixes.  Students are expected to study these roots and affixes on their own.  We will have a quiz in class on Wednesday on this information.

  • Book Adventure
Parents, please remember that your students should be reading at home each day.  Each student is expected to read four books and pass a test for each on the Book Adventure website.  Students should have already signed up on the Book Adventure website and can take the tests on computers at home or on computers in the school library.

  • Lexile Testing
During the first weeks of school, all seventh grade students at Mountain Sky will take the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) test to determine their level of reading comprehension.  This is expressed as a Lexile score.  Most students took this test toward the end of sixth grade if they came to Mountain Sky from either John Jacobs, Lookout Mountain, Moon Mountain, or Shaw Butte.  We will be monitoring all students throughout the school year by re-taking this test to look for growth in reading comprehension as the year progresses.
