Weekly Science Vocabulary - Week #36 - ‎(None Special Edition Research Week)‎

Pollution  (n) – An unwanted change in the environment caused by substances, such as wastes, or forms of energy, such as radiation. Pollution comes in many forms on Earth and is causing the environment to weaken.  
Hazardous Waste (n) – Waste that is harmful to the environment that can catch fire, corrode, or eat through metal, explode or make people sick. Hazardous waste includes waste from computers, nuclear reactors, chemicals from aerosols and much more.  
CFC's  (n) - any of several simple gaseous compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, fluorine that cause ozone depletion.  CFC’s are found in solvents such as cleaning supplies, aerosols, plastics and can break down the ozone layer on Earth.  
Renewable Resource (n) – A natural resource that can be replaced at that same rate at which the resource is consumed.  Solar energy and wind energy are considered renewable resources.  
Nonrenewable Resource (n) – A resource that forms at a rate that is much slower than the rate at which it is consumed. Fossil fuels are considered nonrenewable resources because they are being consumed faster than they can be replaced.  
Overpopulation (n) – The presence of too many individuals in an area for the available resources.  Human overpopulation is an increasing environmental problem for the planet as time goes on.  
Biodiversity (n) - The number and variety of organisms in a given area during a specific period of time.  Biodiversity in the Amazon rainforest is decreasing due to human activity.
