Math Children will continue to connect number words, numerals and quantities. Counting a set of 20. Combining two amounts. Keeping track of a growing set of objects and finding the total after a one, two, or three is added for a sum up to 7. Add and subtract one to/from numbers up to 10. Use a ten frame to develop visual images up to 10. Modeling the action of combining and separating situations. Combining two amounts and separating one amount from another. Develop an understanding of one more, one fewer. Compare two quantities to see which is more. ongoing until mastered
Reading If your want to additional work in reading with your child than the reading paper that comes home, here is what we are learning: The children will continue to work on letters and sounds and learn sight words. The letters that should be mastered are Oo, Gg, Ff, Bb, Hh, Ll and Kk. We will be blending these letters together to make CVC words bit, fit, dig, etc. Sight words for this month are: this, here, me, for, where, do, see. Remember to really work with your children with these as there will be 57 total this year. We will also be focusing on comprehension of stories. We will focus on characters, title, author, generating and answering questions, and we will learn to draw conclusions and re-read for understanding. We will also be continuing on focusing on word part sounds and word families with short o CVC words. ongoing until mastered
Writing We will continue the tedious work of being able to write a sentence. The children should first state a simple sentence which includes some of the sight words they know or can easily recall. Something like The cat can go. If the words are not spelled correctly in their sentences it is ok if they are hard sight words or words that they haven’t learned yet. Invented spelling is a pre-cursor to spelling. Of course, the word should have some sounds that correspond to the correct letters, the more the better. The children should develop confidence and a love of writing at this stage. Pictures are encouraged and are part of kindergarten writing also. Ongoing until mastered.
