Ellis Island Living History Experience

posted May 6, 2018, 5:15 PM by Lisa Billings

On May 18th, the third grade students will be participating in a living history simulation. We will be taking them back in time to the year 1910. The students will be assuming the identities of immigrants coming from Europe to America and will be finding their way around Ellis Island.

Please help your student create a costume to wear at school on that day. Boys during that time would have worn button down shirts, dress pants, and dress shoes. Old-fashioned hats would be a plus. Girls during this era would have worn longer skirts and/or dresses. Very modest blouses and some sort of head covering such as a scarf. We are hoping you can help your child put something together from your closets. It is not necessary to go to any expense to purchase a fancy costume. The people they are representing would have had little more than the clothes on their backs. You can get many ideas by doing a google image search for “Ellis Island Immigrants”.

Please let one of us know if you have any questions. If you are interested in seeing your child participate in this event, please sign up as a volunteer. Parent spectators detract from the authenticity of the simulation and so we ask that everyone in attendance play a “role” in our production.

The annual WESD Food Drive will begin on Monday, February 12th & runs through Friday, February 23rd.

Our school goal is 5,000 cans. If we reach 5,000, our Principal, Mrs. Johnson will have a special marshmallow surprise waiting for her!!!

FYI – we will not count separate packets of oatmeal, Kool-aid, drink mixes, etc. as 1 item – you will need a minimum of 5 of these to count as 1 to be fair. In addition, cases of water bottles are accepted, and will be counted as five “cans”
