Week of  Oct. 31, 2013
Kindergarten has been working with the art element of pattern. They are making folded butterflies with pattern.
First Grade will be doing Georgia O'Keeffe large flowers.
Second Grade is working with Geometric shapes and sculptures
Third grade is finishing a shading unit and starting a clay project making coil pots.
Fourth grade is working with Fantasy Landscapes.
 Fifth grade is drawing cityscapes using one point perspective.

 Sixth grade is starting designing their car advertisements.



 Seventh grade is working on clay whistles.


 Eighth grade is working with 3 color block prints in a Chinese style of block printing

   















Welcome to the new school year.




We have a new curriculum and  new art assessments to pilot this year in 5th grade and 8th grade.
I am looking forward to new projects.
We have Mrs. Jordan joining us this year for the first semester.  She is an Art Student Teacher Candidate from ASU. 
The art classes have begun the school year with a focus on color and all the ways to use color in their art work.



Kindergatern will be observing and drawing trees from the courtyard.
First grade is working on drawing different points of view, drawing penquins 
Second grade will be creating paper collages in the style of Bearden.
Third grade are working on creating block prints.
Fourth grade is weaving simple flat samples.
Fifth grade will be creating 2 color block prints of their pets.
Sixth grade will be starting their sculpture unit
Eighth grade is finishing up their masks and will be creating their clay tiles for the mural.


March is Youth Art Month
Please join us in celebrating at two events.
The WESD student art show is at  ASU West Fletcher Library on the 2nd and 3rd floors.  The show is up through March 29th. The reception is on March 29,2016 from 5 pm -7pm.  We have several students with art at this event.

The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve at 3711 W. Deer Valley Rd.  has student artwork on display this month.  We have 3rd grade artwork at this event.  On March 19th from 10 am-4pm there is a free Archaeology Festival.  

Art Lessons for the week of Feb. 1, 2016
Kindergarten classes were working with Chinese number symbols and listening to the story of the Chinese Calendar and the animals represented.
First grade is finishing their pointillism pictures.
Second grade is finishing up their clay "taco fish".
Third grade is beginning their rock art projects the the annual Deer Valley Rock ART EXPO.
Fourth grade is finishing up their tessellations designs.
Fifth grade is starting their Greek Vase lesson.
Sixth grade are working on their clay car models.
Eighth grade is finishing their canvas board painting with the theme of music and movement.
  


Art Lessons for the week of Jan. 19,2016
Kindergarten classes will be finishing up their Picasso Portraits.
First grade will be introduced to pointillism and create a simple bowl of fruit 
Second grade will be making clay fish.
Third grade will be finishing up their tessellation patterns 
Fourth grade will be completing their tessellation patterns.
Fifth grade will be introduced to Franz Marc and his abstract color techniques.
Sixth grade is creating car advertisements
Eighth grade is working with canvas board and acrylic paint 



Art Lessons for the week of Jan. 11, 2016
Kindergarten classes will be introduced to the artist Pablo Picasso and participate in a lesson on how to draw a portrait.
First grade will be working on the watercolor techniques of wet on wet to create a sunset painting.
Second grade is working of the correct proportions of a face for a portrait.
Third grade will be creating a simple tessellation pattern.
Fourth grade will be creating a tessellation pattern that they choose :translation, rotation or reflection.
Fifth grade is continuing their weaving projects.
Sixth grade will start planning their car advertisements.
Eighth grade will begin their themed  paintings of music and movement.

What is happening in Art classes the week of Nov. 16, 2015
Kindergarten, Second and Fifth grade will be working on their song illustrations for the WINTER ART SHOW.  This will type into the WINTER CONCERT.
First grade is working on their texture project with drawing and making clay bears.
Third grade is working on their clay project making a coil bowl.
Fourth grade will be starting their imaginary landscape of a planet in our solar system.
Seventh grade will be working on their realistic and abstract self portraits.
Eighth grade is continuing work on their masks. 



What is happening in Art classes the week of Nov. 9, 2015
Kindergarten will be drawing a song illustration of one of their songs for the Winter Concert, it will be on display in the art show in the library the night of the concert. 
First grade is continuing their textured bear projects.
Second grade is working on their song illustrations
Third grade will be finishing their desert landscapes and starting their clay coil bowl project.
Fourth grade is finishing up their Amate Bark Paintings.
Fifth grade is glazing their clay container projects.
Seventh grade is working on drawing with the theme "I am Proud to be an Arizona".
Eighth grade is working on their plaster masks.

Kindergarten classes will be painting their pinch pots they made last week.
First grade will be making clay bears/or drawing bears with the focus of creating texture.
Second grade will begin their song illustrations  of their songs for the winter concert and the winter art show
Third grade is continuing their O'Keeffe inspired painting of shells/desert mountains.
Fourth grade is continuing their AZ theme drawings and finishing their Amate Bark Painitngs
Fifth grade is working on their clay project of a container with animal features.
Seventh grade is finishing constructing their 3-D models of their science creature.
Eighth grade is working on their plaster masks.


Art classes for the week of Oct. 26-15
Kindergarten classes will be creating their first clay project in the form of a pinch pot.
First grade will be working with creating texture (fur of a bear) in a drawing 
Second grade is continuing to work with landscapes.
Third grade is continuing their O'Keeffe inspired  sea shell and desert mountain paintings.
Fourth grade will be working on an Arizona themed project.
Fifth grade is starting their clay containers with animal features.
Seventh grade is building and creating their 3-D science creatures
Eighth grade is starting their plaster mask projects.

Kindergarten and first grades will be working with watercolor painting flowers and working with organic shapes.
Second grade will be working with landscapes.
Third grade is finishing up their self-portraits and will be starting studying Georgia O'Keeffe and her desert paintings.
Fourth grade is working on their Amate Bark Paintings.'
Fifth grade is finishing up their Surrealistic paintings.
Seventh grade is working on their Informational Posters on their science creatures.
Eighth grade is starting their clay tiles for the mural.

Kindergarten classes will be making line scultures to reinforce different types of lines they have been drawing.
First grade is working with overlapping shapes.
Second grade is finishing up their still life drawings 
Third grade is continues tp paint and finish their self-portraits
Fourth grade working on their Amate Bark Paintings.
Fifth grade is working on their Surrealism paintings.
7th grade is working on their science posters
8th grade is working on their multi-colored block prints.


Art classes for the week of 9-21-15
Kindergarten classes will be working with shapes, geometric and organic, to draw a basic picture of a house and trees.
First grade will continue to work on the idea of designing shapes in a space.
Second is identifying and  drawing  a still life.
Third grade is working on their painting of their self portraits.
Fourth grade will start a planning an Amate Bark Painting.
Fifth grade is studing Surrealism and Surrealistic artist.  They will be designing their own Surrealistic  painting.
Seventh grade is starting on their adapted science creature poster.
Eighth grade is continuing their block print designs.  They are using multiple colors in their final prints.

Art classes for the week of 9-8-15
With the shorten week I will not see Kindergarten this week
First grade class will continue to work on line designs
Second grade will be working with line and various types of lines.
Third grade will continue working on their self-portrait project creating a skin tone monochromatic chart.
Fourth grade is creating mandalas using tertairy colors.
Fifth grade will be drawing items in 4  styles of realism, cubism, impressionism and surrealism.
Seventh and Eighth grade will be using songs for inspiration of their drawings.
Eighth grade will be creating block prints with their images.


Art classes for the week of 8-31-15
Kindergarten will finish their line project by adding primary colors to create a Mondrian style artwork
First grade will be working with line, creating various patterns and lines 
Second grade is finishing their warm and cool color painting.
Third grade is continuing to shade using their own self-portrait to shade.
Fourth grade will be starting a mandala pattern using tertiary colors
Fifth grade is finishing their mandala projects making their own color choices
Seventh and Eighth grade are finishing the color exploration in watercolor project.



Art classes for the week of 8-24-15
Kindergarten classes will be working on the art element of line (vertical, horizontal and diagonal.  
First grade will continue to work with primary and secondary colors to create their artwork.
Second grade will continue working with the warm and cool colors .
Third grades will continue working on shading techniques and drawing techniques.
Fourth grade is finishing up their complementary colors artwork and will begin to work with the tertiary colors
Fifth grade will choose a color combination to complete their mandala artwork
7th and 8th grade are continuing their color exploration with watercolors and a still life set up.




Art classses for the week of 8-17--15 through 8-21-15
Kindergarten classes will be working on introduction to color wheels primary colors and secondary colors.
First grade will do a review of primary and secondary color in a painting project.
Second grade will be making painting using warm and cool colors.
Third grade will be working on drawing techniques of shading and value studies.
Fourth grade will be review the color wheel with a focus on complementary color and tertiary colors.
Fifth grade will be working with analogous colors.
Seventh  and Eight grade will be working with color mixing and color theory using water color.










 Art Classes for the week of 8-10-15 throught 8-14-15

Our first days in art class will be focused on setting up and reviewing our rules, procedures and expectations.  The art studio(classroom) will run smoothly when everyone is on board with saftey and the daily routines.
I look forward to meeting all our new students and getting caught up with our returning students.
Our first lessons will be on using imagination to create works of art.

Art Lessons for 3-33-15-through 4-3-15
Kindergarten are finishing their tree pictures using watercolor pencils
First grade will start a simple pointillism drawing of a bowl of fruit
Second Grade will paper masks with patterns.
Third grade is creating block prints
Fourth grade is starting on their rain stick cover patterns
Fifth grade is making 2 color block prints
Sixth grade is working on their sculpture of their alter ego

Kindergarten classes with be working with 2-D and 3-D shapes drawing a caterpillar and then creating a 3-D caterpillar
First grade will be working on simple landscapes working with various types of lines
Second grade will be working with shapes to create a pattern
Third grade will start their rock art project that focus on Arizona Desert 
Fourth grade will start the tessellation patterns
Fifth grade are finishing up their weaving projects.
Sixth grade is working on car advertisements
Eighth grade is starting their plaster masks

Art Lessons for 1-5 through 1-9- 2015
Kindergarten classes will be working with chalk and creating sunsets or sunrises by blending various colors of chalk.
First grade will be working with symbols in their artwork.
Second grade will be working on drawing penguins from different points of view.
Third grade will be weaving simple baskets.
Fourth grade will be creating a painting Amate bark paintings.
Fifth grade will be weaving 2 sided pouches.
Sixth grade and Eighth grade will be starting a new semester in art so they will be reviewing expectations and procedures .  They will be creating their sketchbooks for their project planning and review.

Art Lessons for 12-1 through 12-5-2014
Kindergarten classes will listen to a book about Pablo Picasso and then draw simple portraits.
First grade will review portraits and draw their own simple portraits.
Second grade will be doing a clay project with a choice of a sea turtle or fish
Third grade is continuing with their O'Keeffe paintings.
Fourth grade is weaving
Fifth grade is continuing their perspective city drawings.
Sixth grade will create a clay plaque with hieroglyphics
Seventh grade will create a clay whistle or rattle.

Art Lessons for 11-17 through 11-21-14
Kindergarten classes will be working of paper weaving, focusing on patterns,
First grade will also be working on paper weaving patterns.
Second grade will be completing their drawing of a still life set up in the art room.
Third grade will be working on their Georgia O'Keffee paintings.
Fourth grade will be working on a simple weaving on a loom.
Fifth grade is working on drawings of a city using the perspective techniques.
Sixth grade is completing their wire scupltures
Seventh grade is completing their science adaption 3-D projects.

Art Lessons for 11-3 through 11-7-14
Kindergarten classes will be making wire line sculptures.
First grade will be painting their clay projects of animals with patterns,'
Second grade will be working on still life drawing.
Third grade will be working on desert mountains and sea shell drawing.
Fourth grade will finish their landmark drawing and working on a clay project focused on landing on another planet,
Fifth grade will finish their mug projects.
Sixth grade continues on their sculpture projects.
Seventh grade will start building their science creatures.

Kindergarten classes will continue to create Gyotaku fish prints
First grade will finish their drawings on animals will patterns and start their clay animal with patterns.
Second grade will start a simple still life drawing
Third grade will start an O'Keffee painting of the desert and sea shells.
Fourth grade will work on Landmark drawings and found object sculptures.
Fifth grade is working on clay containers with animal features.
Sixth grade has started their wire sculptures.
Seventh grade continues on their science posters and 3-D science creature.

I attended a Joint Arts Conference.  We had our first viewing of the new Art Standards.  We were inspired by all the art areas: music, drama, dance and visual arts and media arts coming together to advocate for the importance of the  arts in a dynamic education for our students.

Kindergarten will be creating Gyotaku  fish prints
First Grade will start a drawing and clay project with the theme of animals with patterns.
Second grade will be finishing up their warm and cool paintings.
Third grade will be starting their clay coil pots.
Fourth grade will be working on found object sculptures and drawings of landmark buildings
Fifth grade will be working on clay containers and finishing their bottle sculptures.
Sixth grade will continue on their sculpture with movement unit.
Seventh grade will be working on their science informational posters.

Art Lessons for 10-13 through 10-17-14
Kindergarten classes will be painting their clay pinch pots
First grade will be finishing their O'Keeffe flower paintings
Second grade will be working with warm and cool colors in their watercolor paintings
Third grade will be finishing their painted portraits
Fourth grade will be working on their found object sculptures
Fifth grade will be finishing their Chihuly bottle sculptures
Sixth grade will be starting their wire sculpture project by reading about different kinds of sculptures.
Seventh grade will be starting their science adaptation posters.

Art Lessons for 9-29-14 through 10-3-14.
Kindergarten classes will be introduced to clay and create a simple pinch pot,
First grade will continue with the O'Keeffe flower paintings.
Second grade will finish up their portraits.
Third grade will start painting their self portrait using their painting chart to mix the skin tones.
Fourth grade will be working on their found object sculptures and landmark photo transfers.
Fifth grade will continue on their Chihuly bottle sculptures and clay mugs.
Sixth grade will finish their car advertisements and clay cars.
Seventh grade will finish their shoe collages and clay shoes,

Three  6th graders will have their art at First Friday's on Oct. 3rd.


Art Lessons for 9-22 through 9-26
Kindergarten classes will be working on watercolor flowers.
First Grade will be working on watercolor flowers inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe
Second grade will continue on their portraits.
Third grade continues mixing tints and shades of brown for their self portrait project.
Fourth grade will continue their found object sculptures.
Fifth grade will be working on their colored bottle sculptures.
Sixth grade will continue on their car advertisement.
Seventh grade will continue on their shoe  drawings.



Art Lessons for 9-15 through 9-19
Kindergarten classes will be using watercolor paint to enhance their shape drawings.
First grade will finish their shape drawing.
Second grade will work on portraits and proportions.
Third grade will be working on the next step of their portraits by mixing tints and shades of brown for the self portrait paintings.
Fourth grade will finishing their Expressionistic paintings. And hopefully starting their found object sculptures.
Fifth grade will be working on bottle sculptures inspired by Chihuly
Sixth grade is working on their car advertisements
Seventh grade is working on their shoe collages.



Art classes for 9-8 through 9-12
Kindergarten classes will continue to work with Shapes .  Basic shapes in everyday objects.
First grade classes will be working with Shapes 2-D and 3-D.  They will use  a variety of shapes to create drawing.
Second grade classes will continue to work on their landscape.
Third grade classes will finish up their shaded self-portrait drawing.
Fourth grade classes will finish their Expressionistic Animal paintings and start their found object sculptures.
Fifth grade classes will finish their Expressionistic Animal paintings.
Sixth grade classes will start their car advertisements.
Seventh grade classes will start their personal narrative drawings centered around their favorite shoes.
 


Art classes for 9-2-14 through 9-5-14
Kindergarten classes will be working on Shapes.  They will investigate the basic shapes in everyday objects.
First grade classes will continue to review primary colors and lines in simple paintings,
Second grade classes will  create landscapes focusing on foreground, middle ground, background and horizon line.
Third grade classes will be working on self portraits. They will practice how to use a grid to transfer and image.
Fourth and fifth grade classes on working on color in Expressionistic animal paintings.
Sixth grade will be creating landscapes that includes a building in perspective
Seventh grade classes are working on watercolor landscapes.
