The St Marcellin Curriculum
St. Marcellin prides itself with a long tradition of quality education in a positive Christian environment.
Year 1-6 are taught not only the building blocks of their further education, but the building blocks of life, as well as the influence of the Catholic Church on their life. All age groups attend regular school Masses and liturgies both at Holy Family Parish and in the Marist Chapel.
Year 7-8 are taught the necessary skills to follow on from St. Marcellin to the secondary provider of their choice. This involves:
▶ Travelling to Cullinane College for Technology
▶ Specific Intermediate approaches to reading, writing and maths.
▶ Teachers with specific knowledge and experience of teaching Intermediate children.
▶ Specialised ipad education programme.
As well as learning strong Christian ethics, to support them through the rest of their life.
Every School in New Zealand is given the opportunity to develop the New Zealand curriculum in a way that suits the needs of their children and community. While not exhaustive, some of the specific areas we have been developing are:
Religious Education: As a Catholic school we follow the: “Catholic Education Programme.” This involves the children
working through a range of units such as:
Communion of Saints
English: The Three Level Guide: “Thinking like a detective; by looking for evidence, to find hidden meaning.”
In some of the Year 4-8 classrooms the Three Level Guide is used to under pin the reading programme. This programme recognizes the importance of developing a range of “Higher Order Thinking Skills,” as part of the reading programme. It provides a framework to move the reader beyond decoding and comprehending a range of texts to developing a range of inferential and thinking skills.
All levels are equally important, but each level teaches a different type of thinking...
Level 1: Word Attack and Summarising. This is where children build their reading vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Level 2: Inferential thinking. Children develop a range of critical thinking skills, looking for inferences in the text such as: bias, symbolism, messages, issues and language features.
Level 3: Building Connections. Children improve their understanding of the text by relating it to: their own personal experiences, other texts they have read or real world events.
