Dub Gabriel is an electronic musician/DJ/mixer from, I am assuming from San Francisco, since his record label, Brooklyn Massive is located in California.

Base on his name, I was expecting more of a reggae-influence, and he doesn't disappoint with songs like "Chasing the Paper" (feat. Jah Dan), "Battle of the Righteous Man" (feat. Dr. Israel & Maga Bo) and "Mashout" (feat. Juakali). "Mashout" in particular felt like it was reggae, but really sped up. I especially liked the line and theme of "for the money some people will do anything" in "Chasing the Paper".

The rest of the album reflect his other influences, including rap (especially on "Rundown"), hip hop ("Crooklyn Clouds"), and jazz. Of the non-reggae tracks, I would have to admit to really liking the woman-empowered vocals on "Spirit Made Flesh" by Karen Gibson Roc.... although the very sexy French accents by Judith Juillerat on "La Vie Senvole" was a close second.

I was drawn to this album because one of the song features Michael Stipe, famed singer of R.E.M., as guest vocalist. After hearing "Cheree", I felt it was somewhat of a disappointment. It should be noted that it's a cover song of a band called Suicide, but I'm not familiar with them enough to tell you more about this song. There's not much in terms of lyrics and I felt like it should be more of a transitional song, rather than the album closer.

Still, it is just one song out of 10 that I was disappointed in, so it can't be all that bad. And to be honest, maybe it was because I had high hopes for the Michael Stipe song. Fans of R.E.M. should definitely want to check back with me in a few weeks, as I have a new release from R.E.M. for review, which I am very excited about.

By the way, as you can tell from all those "featuring" notes, each of these songs are collaboration with different musician, but with a Dub Gabriel's touch. It makes for an interest album, and if you're a fan of any of those artists I've mentioned, you will definitely enjoy this album.

You can purchase in MP3 format via Dance Tracks Digital (released September 9th) or physical CD via amazon.com (released November 4th). Currently, as I write this, his record label is only selling his two previous records, Bass Jihad (2007) and Ascend (2007).
