On Mike Krol Is Never Dead: The First Two Records, we catch up—with the past, that is. Indeed, Turkey, released in 2015, is Chapter 3 of the Krol saga; here, finally, are its long-lost predecessors. Self-released in 2011, I Hate Jazz was the opening salvo of World War Krol. Only 500 copies were pressed; they were given away to anyone who showed interest (and many who showed none whatsoever). Including Krol classics like “Fifteen Minutes” and “Like a Star,” the record has long been unavailable. Trust Fund followed in 2013; its 500 copies sold out on the ensuing tour, fueling a mini-mania that would elevate it to cult status.

This 2-LP set includes both records on freshly pressed Merge vinyl; an illuminating selection of digital outtakes, demos, and b-sides; and a fold-out poster showcasing an array of Mike Krol ephemera. The first 300 pre-orders in our store will receive a glossy black & white headshot personally signed by Mike! In addition, five randomly selected pre-orders will include a one-of-a-kind drawing of notorious cartoon rocker “Mike Krol” by illustrator and Mike Krol Friend Club member Ben Levin.

Krol shared his hopes for the bonus tracks:

I had some fun with going through these and arranged them chronologically in the order in which they were conceived to (hopefully) show growth, or my thought process getting figured out over the years. The recordings are all over the place in style, quality, and length, and I added a few little fun transition snippets to tie things together. When you listen in one sitting, with the songs in order, it has the mixtape vibe I was hoping to achieve, Guided By Voices style. I’m excited for the release of these tracks NOT because I think they are “good”—or in some cases even listenable—but rather because I hope that the “kids” who get this record hear them and think, “Whoa, I can do this!” and then go and start recording and making their own music. It’s all about inspiring the youth, ya know?

Everything on here was recorded and mixed by myself on either a 4-track cassette recorder or the free version of GarageBand that comes on an Apple computer. I never learned how to record properly, never took a single guitar lesson, never thought in my #wildestdreams that these songs would be heard by anyone other than my close friends (and definitely not released on THE record label I so deeply admired during my formative years recording them). But that never stopped me from having fun and trying to express myself through a personal creative process. So with that, I hope you guys enjoy them.
