Teaching can often be a thankless job, and I know I don't think thank and show appreciation for teachers enough!  I didn't as a student and know I can sometimes take for granted the amazing teachers I have the opportunity to work with each day!  Have you thanked a teacher lately?  Parents, have you reconnected with a former teacher who inspired you?  Have you thanked a teacher who has helped your child to grow, learn a tough life lesson, or show great improvement this year?  If not, this week would be a great time to do so!  Look them up on Social Media, give them a phone call, send them an e-mail, find their address and send them a note.  Students, have you thanked the teachers who have been there for you everyday the last nine months?  Have you sought out a former teacher who has helped you to get to where you are today?  You don't have to spend any money, but I remember how much a simple Thank You meant to me during my time as a teacher!  Take time to let all of the current and former teachers in your life know how much they have meant to you!

Finishing Strong!

It is hard to believe we are closing in on the 2015-2016 School Year, it seems like only yesterday Mr. Buseman and I were just beginning to meet students and staff for the first time. Monday will mark our 153rd day of school, leaving 27 days left in our year. It is always difficult to stay focused as the weather gets nice and all of our state testing finishes up. Everyone begins to think about and plan summer vacations, and there are lots of exciting field trips and events planned by each grade level to close out the school year. All of these things get us out of our normal routine, and could hamper our ability to finish the year like we started. Overall, we have had a great year at Webster City Middle School and we want to finish the year that way. In order to do that, we will need every student in school every day, prepared to continue learning and utilizing everyday left together this year to its fullest potential.

I can now officially say I have seen what all of the hype is about with regards to Character Counts Day after getting to experience my first one on April 8th! It was an awesome day, filled with many learning experiences for our students that were all centered around the idea of giving back to others. My challenge to each of our students, staff members, and all stakeholders reading this blog is to now carry the momentum from the day forward! Don't just make displaying character and giving back a one time event each year, but truly make it a part of your every day life! Checkout our latest From the Middle episode below to see some action shots and interviews from the amazing day! Thanks again to everyone who helped to make this day possible, we couldn't have done it without you!

The Countdown to Character Counts Day!!!!

Character Counts Day 2016 is almost here, less than two weeks away! The theme for this year will be "Character Counts: The Ultimate Gift!" We are very excited about our opening band and speaking group Attaboy. This group of talented young speakers and musicians travel the country presenting school assemblies to middle and high schools about being a person of Character! Checkout the video to the left, to get a sample of what we are going to be experiencing!

We will also be partnering with our local elementary schools to complete a lesson on giving by reading and doing activities around the book Boxes for Katje. We will read the book, discuss the lessons learned from the book, write letters to students in African Schools, and discuss what items we could send along with African Classroom Connection to enhance schools in Africa.

The other big activity of the day will be our Meal Packaging Event! We are getting closer to our goal of $10,000 total dollars needed to package 40,000 meals on April 8th. We have had many generous donations from individuals, businesses, civic groups, and foundations. We are still looking for additional donations to make this event a reality. Please consider donating on our Go Fund Me page https://www.gofundme.com/ecsykm8c or by sending a check to Webster City Middle School. The students in each homeroom at Webster City Middle School will be having a Change Drive to help raise the money needed to reach our goal. The contest will start on Monday, March 28th and end Friday, April 1st at noon. Students are encouraged to bring any spare change to their homeroom and deposit into their designated coin bucket. The winning homeroom in each grade will get VIP floor seating for the concert and speaker. The winning homeroom overall will get a private meet and greet with the band following the performance.

Week of March 21st

posted Mar 20, 2016, 11:59 AM by Adam Zellmer

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break, I know I did! It is hard to believe that Monday will be the 129th day of the school year. There are always many activities to look forward to at the end of the school year and these last 51 days are looking to fly by fast! Each grade level has a college visit to attend and many grade levels still have field trips planned throughout the spring. We have our MAP testing coming up in mid April to show us the progress we have made over this school year. Track season is also another sign of spring and that gets started this week too. One day that I heard about constantly through the interview process, and during my first days and weeks at Webster City Middle School was Character Counts Day. We want to ensure that this day continues to be a special, memorable, and positive learning experience for our students. We still have quite a ways to go if we hope to reach our goal of packaging 40,000 meals for Food Banks across Iowa. Please share our story with grandparents, aunts, uncles, civic groups, churches, and friends. Every dollar counts, and will impact the lives of every student in our school and the needy families that will benefit from these meals. Please share our link and help to spread the word about our upcoming Food Packaging Event!

At Webster City Middle School we have long been a school devoted to the 6 Pillars of Character.  On Friday, April 8th our annual Character Counts Day will be held at Webster City Middle School.  We will be focusing on the Character Pillars of Citizenship, Responsibility, & Caring during our day of Giving Back to others.  We will be giving back to our community, to our state, to our country, and to our world during this awesome day of Character Development!

As part of this day, we will be hosting a Food Packaging Event in which every 5th-8th Grader in our school will be helping to package 40,000 meals for food pantries throughout the state of Iowa.  In order to put on this event we need to raise $10,000.  Please help us to reach our goal by contributing yourself, and also sending your family and friends links to our Go Fund Me Page that is being used to help us raise the needed funds.  You can also feel free to drop off donations to Webster City Middle School!

Character education is a pivotal and important part of the well-rounded educational experiences we hope for our students at Webster City Middle School to receive.  This will be an amazing learning experience for our students, and also help out needy families throughout our region.  Below you will find a list of nine reasons why character education is so important in our schools.

9 Reasons for Character Education in our Schools:

  1. There is a clear and urgent need. Young people are increasingly hurting themselves and others and are decreasingly concerned about contributing to the welfare of others.
  2. Transmitting values is and always has been the work of civilization. A society needs values education to survive and thrive. Historically, this is a role shared by home, school, and faith communities..
  3. There is common, ethical ground, even in our value-conflicted society.
  4. Democracies have a special need for moral education because democracy is government by the people themselves.
  5. There is no such thing as values-free education.
  6. The great questions facing both the individual person and the human race are moral questions. Of utmost importance: How should I live my life? How can we live with one another?
  7. There is a broad-based, growing support for values education in the schools.
  8. Commitment to moral education is essential if we are to attract and keep good teachers.
  9. Values education is a doable job.
