Ms. Heyboer

Ms. Heyboer

Hello and welcome! I am Ms. Heyboer and I am so happy that I will be your child's Kindergarten Teacher for the 2023/2024 school year. I hope you all have had an amazing summer, and I look forward to meeting you all on the first day of school. It will be a fun and enjoyable year full of friends, adventures and learning!

This year will be my second year at Bond Academy, and my third year as an OCT teacher. Teaching is a passion of mine and I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. I hope to inspire and spark a love of learning in your children throughout the year that will last a lifetime! Apart from teaching inside the classroom, I also have spent numerous years instructing ESL courses and swimming lessons. I currently hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Education from Trent University.

The Senior Kindergarten students will focus on sight words, their recognition, and using the sight word in simple sentences. All students will work on beginning sounds and ending sounds through a variety of activities. We will also explore poetry with a poem of the week.

During the second term, we will be focusing on short vowels, rhyming, sight words and journal writing. (On going activities in our learning centers also include rhyming activities, syllables, building sentences and our sight words. We will also work on journal writing and guided reading activities.)

Social Studies-  We will be talking about special days in fall, such as Rosh Hashanah, Orange Shirt Day, Yom Kippur, Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Remembrance Day.

Character Education- We will be learning throughout the year about different types of Character traits. Each month will be a new character focus. This includes Respect, Responsibility, Fairness + Sportsmanship, Cooperation, Compassion + Kindness, Self-Control, Citizenship, Honesty + Integrity, Patience, Pride + Perseverance.

Science- Seasons, Outer Space, Sink and Float Experiments, Lights and Shadows, Dinosaurs, Nutrition, Hygiene, Dental Health, Fizzy Rainbows Experiments, States of Matter.

*STEAM- Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math

We will be using different STEAM activities on each unit.

Show and Tell:  Each week we have a theme related to our Social Studies and Science Units. You can bring in an object that is related to our unit or something meaningful. For example, for Community Helpers Unit, a student could bring in an object that describes their favourite community helper (eg. doctor kit, fire truck, fire hat, etc.). You are welcome to send in a picture, a piece of art, or something that your child accomplished that is special as well.

Homework

Reading builds up your child's vocabulary and fluency. Practice reading every weekend with a family member and log it on your Reading Log. Your child can read to you, or a family member can read to your child (choral reading - reading the words together). Do a picture walk and find the sight words that you know. At the end of the month, you will get a reward or treat for filling up your Reading Log. Happy reading!
