S.O.S. (Signs of Suicide) Prevention & Awareness Program

posted Nov 19, 2018, 7:17 AM by Mary McCulley _ Staff - HeritageMS
S.O.S. (Signs of Suicide) is a depression awareness and suicide prevention program that is presented to all 7th graders in WCPSS each year. At HMS, this information is being delivered through the Healthful Living classes during 2nd quarter by the 7th grade counselor, Mary McCulley, and the school psychologist, Brianna Bradsher. Students will be shown a video followed by discussion of risk factors, signs that indicate someone is depressed or considering suicide and what students can do if they are worried that a classmate or friend may be suicidal or engaging in self-harm. Students will be given the BSAD (Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression) which is a self-survey and will then be shown how to score it, and what the scores mean. After each presentation, any student requesting to be seen by an adult will be seen by Ms. McCulley or any available staff member in student services the same day, if possible. Parents will be notified if their child is screened for depression or suicide. Letters about this program were sent home the week of November 5 for tracks 1, 2 & 4 and the week of November 13 for track 3  It is only necessary for you to sign the bottom of the letter and return it IF YOU DO NOT want your child to participate. Presentations for tracks 1 & 3 will be the week of November 27 and presentations for tracks 2 & 4 will be the week of December 11.  I have posted the schedule, by healthful living teacher, and a copy of the parent letter in English and Spanish on this website.  Feel free to contact me, Ms. McCulley, if you have any questions at: (919) 562-6204 x 22512 or email: mmcculley@wcpss.net.
