Advisory

Advisory is a 32-minute class held every day at the middle school.

The objective for advisory is to help students improve their reading skills.

Everyday, student bring to class a novel (chapter book) to read.  This can be a paper back book or a hard cover book.  Students also bring their iPad to class every day.

Silent Reading Days

Students are awarded up to three points per day for their effort reading, and the quality of their writing assignment.

After reading, in the final eight minutes of class, each student completes the assignment for that day in Campus Portal, using Safari, on their iPad.  The directions for silent reading days are below:

Directions:  Please NUMBER 1-5 and then ANSWER the following:
    1. What book did you read?
    2. On which page did you start reading?
    3. At the end of your reading, what page were you on?
    4. Write a few sentences to summarize what you just read today.
    5. What score would you give yourself today for your silent reading in class?
Please raise your hand and show your teacher when completed.

Students are credited with up to three points per day for their effort silent reading, and the quality of their writing assignment.

On select days, typically Monday and Friday, the teacher will read aloud to the students.

Read Aloud Days

On read aloud days, in the final eight minutes of class, each student completes the assignment for that day in Campus Portal, using Safari, on their iPad.  The directions for silent reading days are below:

Directions:
  • In a paragraph or two, summarize what happened in this chapter.
  • Include details.
  • Write at least five solid sentences in the paragraph
  • Check and fix punctuation, capitals, grammar, etc.
When you finish, raise your hand, and show your teacher.

Students are credited up to three points per day for their quiet attention during the read aloud, and the quality of their writing assignment.

Technical Issues

If a student is unable to use their iPad, for any reason, then they have two choices for completing the assignment:

They may use the computer at their desk to complete the written assignment.

They may complete the assignment on paper, and hand this paper in to the teacher's desk.

Absences

When a student is absent, they may make up their missed assignment by silently reading for 30-minutes outside of the school day.  They then complete the "Silent Reading Days" assignment on their iPad.   Students make up missed "Read Aloud Days" by reading in their own book, and by completing the "Silent Reading Days" questions into the appropriate assignment in Campus Portal.

In order for the teacher to know that this has been submitted, the student must show the teacher the completed assignment on their iPad.  (Campus Portal does not currently alert teachers when new assignments are submitted.)
