Reading Intervention Curriculum

Reading Intervention Process:

    The students are formally assessed 3 times per year;  September, January, and May.  They are given tests that measure decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension.  After analyzing data with 3rd grade classroom teachers we compile intervention groups according to the results.  As students make progress throughout the year they can "graduate"  from intervention group yet they are still monitored through the assessment process.

Reading Intervention Curriculum:

    Intervention groups meet 2 times per week for 40 minutes.  The groups are small, usually 3-5 students.  During this intervention time we get right to work spending 10 minutes on phonics pulling from the Open Court Phonics program as as well as some Wilson Reading System techniques.  The second 15 minutes we work on fluency using Quick Reads a research based fluency program.  Lastly, for 15 minutes we  focus on strategies to improve comprehension;
  • Making Connections
  • Sensory Images
  • Monitoring for Meaning
  • Asking Questions
  • Retelling
  • Inferring
  • Determining Importance

     During the comprehension time we also work on developing test taking skills in preparation for the  Reading Comprehension portion of the 3rd grade MCAS.
