Response to Intervention (RtI):
The students are formally assessed 3 times per year; September, January, and May. Students are also progress monitored in between these formal assessments times to make sure they are progressing or to modify intervention groups. They are given tests that measure decoding skills, fluency, and comprehension. After analyzing data with 2nd and 3rd grade RTI teams which include classroom teachers and special education teachers we compile flexible intervention groups according to the results. We meet throughout the year to check in and modify groups to meet the individual needs of each student.
Reading Small Group Curriculum:
Intervention groups meet 2 times per week for 45 minutes. Small groups are made according to the individual needs of the students after analyzing their assessment data and conferring with the RtI team. The groups are small, usually 3-5 students. During this intervention time we may work on phonics pulling from the Open Court Phonics program as well as some Wilson Reading System techniques and Words Their Way. We also work on fluency using Quick Reads or Read Naturally both research based fluency programs.
Lastly, comprehension groups focus on strategies to improve comprehension;
