Thanks to a generous grant from the Wayland Public Schools Foundation, all of the district librarians were able to attend the American Library Association's MidWinter meeting, January 8 - 11, 2016.  Here, we attended forums and workshops highlighting exciting tools and best practices.  We attended the award ceremony for the highest honors in children's books, including the Caldecott and Newbery Medal.

Every year, during our long, cold winter, kids are invited to participate in the Massachusetts School Library Association bookmark contest.  Every year, kids submit stunning entries.  Finally, this year, one of our beautiful bookmark entries has won the whole state contest!  Congratulations to first grader Alyssa Ao, first prize winner for first grade!!

Get ready for David A. Kelly!

It's been a long, cold January.  We are in the doldrums of winter!  But, we'll escape this cabin fever with a visit from author David A. Kelly on Tuesday, February 4! All students have been learning about Mr. Kelly and many classes have been reading his Ballpark Mysteries.  Around here, baseball means the start of spring - so, we know it is close!  If only the groundhog will agree with us.

What's New in Children's Literature

I'm always excited every year to attend a conference highlighting the best books published in children's literature.  At this conference I connect with other librarians to hear their ideas and strategies they have used in their libraries.  I find ideas for purchasing the best titles for our collection, and ideas for great ways to share literature with our students.

Claypit Cares

Yesterday, Claypit Hill School stopped everything at 1:30 to work on a service project.  We have been doing this for a few years - Claypit Cares.  This type of service educates the whole child - teaching children to be compassionate, kind and respectful.  The Claypit library has a large selection of character education resources which teach children to care.  These can be found in our Open Circle section.  We also provide a list of Open Circle titles on this web site.

Almost November?

Here we are nearing the end of October! Readership at Claypit Hill School is staggering.  Over 2,000 materials have circulated in the last few weeks.  I have caught many kids reading throughout their school day and they can be seen on this web site.
