Congratulations to 4th grader Amelia, whose bookmark has been selected as a state finalist in the Massachusetts School Library Association Bookmark Contest!  This year's bookmark theme is "Your School Library: The Heart of Your School." This is the first time a student from Happy Hollow has been recognized in this contest!  Amelia won an honorable mention in Division 3 (grades 4-6.) Here is the official announcement of all of the winners from the Massachusetts School Library Association website.

The winning students are invited to bring their families, library teachers, classroom teachers, and Wayland administrators to take part in the award ceremony at An Unlikely Story, a bookstore in Plainville, MA owned by Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney.  The ceremony will take place in May. Prizes include

❖ Students: 25 professionally produced bookmarks of their design
❖ School Librarians: 100 professionally produced bookmarks of their design
❖ A JUMBO-SIZE enlargement of their bookmark
❖ A $25.00 gift certificate to a local bookstore
❖ A framed award certificate with our distinguished judges’ autographs
❖ An invitation to participate at the awards ceremony at An Unlikely Story, Plainville, MA on May 9, 2018

Congratulations, Amelia! We are so proud of you!

2018 Author Visit - Matt de la Pena

posted Mar 13, 2018, 8:29 AM by Colleen Flannery   [ updated Mar 13, 2018, 9:13 AM ]

We are pleased to welcome Newbery-Award winning author Matt de la Pena as our visiting author this year. Matt de la Peña is the New York Times Bestselling, Newbery Medal-winning author of six young adult novels (including Mexican White Boy, We Were Here, and The Living) and four picture books (including Love and Last Stop on Market Street). In 2016, he was awarded the NCTE Intellectual Freedom Award. Matt received his MFA in creative writing from San Diego State University and his BA from the University of the Pacific where he attended school on a full basketball scholarship. Matt de la Peña currently lives in Brooklyn NY. He teaches creative writing and visits schools and colleges throughout the country.

Matt de la Peña's book, Last Stop on Market Street astounded the literary world when it won the Newbery Medal as a picture book in 2016.  The Newbery is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Typically, the award is given to a chapter book - but the words in Last Stop on Market Street are so compelling and beautiful that it yielded a very rare Newbery win for a picture book. In 2011, he published his first book for younger readers: A Nation’s Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis.  His next book, Love, for younger readers, was just released in January. Matt also recently wrote a piece about his new book for Time Magazine. This was followed by a beautiful response from fellow children's author Kate DiCamillo (author of The Tale of Despereaux, Mercy Watson, and many more.) I invite you to read both editorials - these serve as powerful reminders about how important and lasting children's books can be.

Matt writes about what he knows - an urban hispanic experience that should speak to many of our students and enlighten all of us. To learn more about Matt, and his many award winning contributions to children's literature, please see his web site at: http://mattdelapena.com/  Matt will visit with students at Happy Hollow on Tuesday, March 27th. Many thanks to the Happy Hollow PTO and to the Wayland Public Schools Foundation for funding this visit.
