SITE COUNCIL MEMBERS NEEDED

There are three openings on the WHS Site Council; one Parent, one Staff Member, and one Community/Business member to replace members whose have left or graduated from the council.  Site Council is the Principal/Parent/Teacher/Student/Community Member board that acts in an advisory capacity to the Principal.  The major roles of the Site Council are to develop and implement the School Improvement Plan, to learn about and provide feedback on the school and district budget, and to bring forward questions and concerns that impact WHS.  All meetings are open to the public and subject to the Open Meeting regulations.  Our scheduled meeting dates are Nov. 22Dec. 20Jan. 24Feb 28Mar. 28,Apr. 25 and May 23.  All meetings are held in the WHS Library from 6:30-8:00pm, unless otherwise announced.  If you are interested in serving in one of the open roles, please contact Shirley Lundberg, WHS Principal, atshirley.lundberg@watertown.k12.ma.us.

LAST CHANCE TO JOIN US IN COSTA RICA

The final deadline for Costa Rica 2017 signups is fast approaching.  Sign up by November 10th to join us on this incredible trip. We will be spending 8 days exploring this amazing country, seeing monkeys swinging through the trees, learning how to cook classic dishes, practicing Spanish, visiting volcanoes and waterfalls and so much more. Email Ms. Prange at kayla.prange@watertown.k12.ma.us or stop by Room 342 for a sign up packet.

CONTACT VERIFICATION SHEETS – These are now Overdue!! Please return them as soon as you can~~

New Student Information System, PowerSchool – Student Contact Information Verification Sheet - The district is transitioning to PowerSchool for student demographics, attendance, storing grades, scheduling and more. Principals have distributed Student Contact Information Verification Sheets to each student for parent completion. When your child brings it home, please be sure to review and modify your contact information, if needed. To ensure the accuracy of our records, every student must return the verification form with a parent signature!  Please be sure to check the order of your contacts, so that the person you want to be called first for any issue or concern, is actually listed as the #1 Contact. WHS Families may return their signed verification form to the WHS Main Office. Thanks!

NEWS FOR SENIORS

  • If you gave Ms. Mundy a baby picture, please pick it up from her ASAP!
  • ALL seniors must be measured for Caps and Gowns on Monday October 31st or Tuesday November 1st during any of the three lunches,  Cost is $30, payable to University Cap & Gown.  Please see posted flyers, or Ms. Taylor with any questions.

WATERTOWN HIGH SCHOOL VOTES!

On Thursday November 3rd, the Social Studies Department will host a WHS Mock Election and Bake Sale.  The mock election will contain votes on the Presidential Election and the Massachusetts Ballot Questions.  Stay tuned for more details!

SERVICE CLUB

The Service Club will be meeting on Tuesday at 7:30am in the Guidance Conference Room. All are welcome to attend! We will be discussing Thanksgiving Baskets.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN STARTING A SWIM TEAM?

The Athletic Department is doing a survey to assess interest in participation in a Boys or Girls Swim Team.  Please stop by the Athletics Office to let Ms. Jae Smith know if you are interested.

MEFA COLLEGE FINANCING SEMINAR

Parent and students are invited to attend a free seminar on paying for college, which will be held on November 3rd from 6-7:30pm in the Lecture Hall at WHS.  This seminar is offered through MEFA, the Commonwealth’s authority on planning, saving and paying for college.  An experienced MEFA representative will provide an overview of the college financing process, including types of financial aid, how to apply, and financing options for your family.

WHS TALENT SHOW

Attention all students and staff!  Do you have a talent that you would like to share with the school?  The WHS Talent show will be held Friday, November 18th at 7pm.  We are looking for all acts!!  Singing, Dancing, Magic, Comedian, Lip Syncs, Instrumental, etc., etc. are all some of the talents that have participated in previous talent shows at WHS.    Auditions will be held Thursday November 3 and Friday November 4 after school in the auditorium.  Sign ups will be earlier that week during lunches.  Auditions are trial runs to make sure that acts are appropriate for school.  Please see your senior officers – Zach Rimsa, Shannon Murphy, Cyril Brutus, Alexis Catsoulis or Ms. Taylor for more information.

FROM THE FAB LAB

Are you curious about 3D printing?  Our favorite 3D model site in the WHS Wayshak Fab Lab is Thingiverse http://www.thingiverse.com/.  If you are not ready to design and model your own, you have a wealth of models here you can download and print. They have a specific section dedicated for education.  Browse projects in different curriculum areas, from math, art, science, special ed and more!  If you want to email us a file, we will do our best to print it for your classroom.

WPS WELLNESS COMMITTEE

The Watertown Public Schools are in need of two high school students to serve on the District’s Wellness Committee. Interested students should see the Guidance Department for more information.  The Wellness Committee meets outside of the school day, so students may earn Community Service hours for their participation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

  • Any student interested in volunteering at the Armenian Museum and Library should see Mrs. Hoffman in Room 256.

GUIDANCE NEWS

  • Senior Parents! Any student planning to attend a post-secondary program next year should consider applying for Financial Aid. This year, the FAFSA (financial aid application) will be available starting October 1. Students and families can get a head start on this important application by visiting www.fafsa.gov and then learn more at our Financial Aid Night on Nov. 3

WHS ATHLETICS

Winter Clearance Cards are now available in Guidance.  They are due to Ms. Tracy by Nov 18th.

The regular Fall Season is coming to a close. 

  • Girls Field Hockey finished the regular season undefeated at 18-0
  • Girls Volleyball, with their 3-1 win over Wakefield this past Wednesday, qualified for the tournament for the first time in the history of the program!
  • Girls/Boys Cross Country is in the Middlesex League meet Monday October 31st @2:30 at Woburn Country Club
  • Girls Field Hockey will scrimmage Walpole on Monday October 31 at 3:45pm
  • Boys/Girls Golf Team was named the State Division 3 Sportsmanship winners and will be honored Tuesday, November 1st at the golf state championships.
  • Cheerleaders are competing this Wednesday November 2 at Arlington at 7:00pm
  • Varsity Football started post season with a solid win over Austin Prep.  We will play the next round this coming Friday night at Victory Field

ABSENCES AND TARDIES

Attendance is essential to a student’s education. When students are not here, they do not have access to the instruction. We expect regular and punctual attendance in all classes. Please note that students are expected to be in their first class of the day at 7:55am.  Students just arriving at the front door at 7:55 a.m. are tardy.

DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS are read every morning and displayed on the Lobby TV.  You can also find them on Twitter:  watertownhighschool@watertownhigh

Please sign in at the main office any time that you have a meeting at, or are visiting WHS.  All visitors must leave a picture ID at the main office and wear a Visitors Badge during their visit.

Students entering the building must use the front door at all times during the school day. Please do not enter through side doors, do not open a side door to let a student in and do not prop or peg a door open.
