Public Forum: January 29

The School Committee and the Watertown Public Schools will be holding a Public Forum on Monday, January 29  beginning at 7:00 PM in the Town Council Chambers located in Town Hall.  Watertown is ready to begin the renovation/reconstruction of its three elementary schools, and as such, we are currently in the process of determining the best programmatic and educational direction for Hosmer, Cunniff, and Lowell Elementary Schools.   Ai3, the architects for the project, conducted two large group visioning sessions in December and are now in the process of meeting with teachers and community members in each of the schools to further refine the vision for these projects.  Prior to beginning work on the schematic design for these buildings, three essential questions must be answered:

  1. Is the Lowell site a viable option for a new Watertown High School, or is it more appropriate to remain as an elementary school?
  2. What should be the capacity for each of the three elementary schools based upon enrollment projections and educational goals?
  3. Should WPS design an early education center located at the Hosmer Elementary School with an integrated preschool/prekindergarten, or continue with one prekindergarten classroom in each of the three elementary schools?

Members of the School Department and our architects will provide information regarding these three questions and will solicit feedback at the Public Forum to help inform the Watertown School Committee as it seeks to answer these questions.  More detailed information about the questions can be found at the WPS website.   The Public Forum will also be broadcast live on WCA-TV.  We look forward to engaging with the community around these three important questions.
