About me--
You can call me Gus, if you'd prefer. I'm married to Kathy, a wonderful woman who spent three years in the US Army and then 32 as a nurse in the Newborn ICU at Boston Children's Hospital. That's her, sitting next to me. Since Covid, she's transitioned to a job in Quality Improvement, writing and editing hospital policies and procedures. I have two kids: Dr. Anders Gustafson, who earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree at UConn and is working as a pharmacist in Austin, TX. Dr. Kerin Gustafson, who did her undergraduate work at UMass-Amherst, graduated with a DMD from BU's Henry M Goldman School of Dental Medicine, and is a dentist in Virginia Beach, VA. They're at the far right and far left in this picture.
I'm a bit of a U.S. history fanatic and love talking about it to anyone. I've traveled quite a bit to see some of the places I teach about and you'll find selected photos on this website of me (and my hat) all over the U.S. and the world. In the picture above, I'm with my daughter's financé and my wife's best friend and her daughter. We're traveling from Barcelona, Spain to France and Italy.
If you'd like to know something to break the ice with me, I love to travel, Dr. Who, Star Trek, Macs, and Saabs (I've owned 8), although now I drive a Tesla. I was born and raised in New Hampshire and still visit family and friends when I can. I was also the high school's Teacher of the Year in 2010. (Really, I have pictures.) I like dark chocolate (Lindt is my favorite), jelly beans (the small ones), Swedish Fish, and candy fruit slices (a lot!). Earl Gray tea is good, too, but I also like the orange or spicy teas, never green. OK, see you in class!
