Note to Parents of 6th Grade Students

At the beginning of this school year this letter was sent via email to the parents of all 6th grade students:

Parents and Guardians of Tonaquint Intermediate School 6th Graders,

As the new school year begins, we as the School Counselors of Tonaquint Intermediate want to inform you of our counseling services.  6th grade is an exciting year and we stay very busy!  Together we have many years of experience with this age of child, a combined 48!  We are here as a resource for you and your student if you need us.

What we do can be grouped into four categories:

Guidance Curriculum:  As school counselors we assist students in developing basic life skills, such as how to cope with difficult situations appropriately.  As a district we have adopted the “Building Resilience” model by Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg.  This model focuses on the 7 C’s: Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, Contribution, Coping, and Control.  There is further information, including descriptions of these C’s on our webpage here: https://sites.google.com/a/washk12.org/tis-guidance-counseling/guidance-curriculum

Responsive Services:  The purpose of responsive services is to intervene on behalf of those students whose immediate personal concerns put their personal, social and/or educational development at risk.  We generally receive our referrals from teachers and parents and work closely with our teachers and parents to assure that your child is performing up to their abilities.

As school counselors our main focus is your child’s emotional and academic well-being.  Sometimes other factors in life can dramatically affect school academics.  While we are not clinical therapists and cannot provide therapy, we can provide you with referrals to these types of therapists, or provide some short-term, goal-oriented interviewing here at school.

We also provide support groups for our students.   Depending on the need of our student body these groups may include: friendship, academic concerns, social concerns, and grief.  If you feel your child could benefit from any of these types of groups, please feel free to contact us.

Individual Planning:  This is something to look forward to in 7th grade.  Next year we will complete a Learning Styles Assessment and a short Personality Inventory with your child in their classes.  Lessons on Teamwork, Balancing Responsibilities, Non-Traditional Careers, and Making Informed Choices will also be presented.

System Support:  In addition to the above mentioned activities, we are also asked to provide other services and management activities which indirectly benefit our students.  These include (but are not limited to):

·         Meet with each teacher team weekly to discuss struggling students

·         Participation in our school’s Improvement Plan and Leadership Team

·         Implementing the state’s standardized testing program

·         Input in building the school schedule as well as each individual student’s schedule

·         Creating and maintaining support features such as our website: https://sites.google.com/a/washk12.org/tis-guidance-counseling/

Wow!  Thank you for reading all of that!  We look forward to working with your student this year and hope they have a great experience here at Tonaquint.  Please come in or call us if you would like to set up a meeting or if we can be of assistance in any way.
