Summer Reading

Dear American Studies Student,

Congratulations, you are taking American Studies next year!

This summer you are asked to read:  Ghosts of War: A True Story of a 19 Year Old GI by Ryan Smithson.

Book overview from Harper Collins Publishers: Ryan Smithson joined the Army Reserve when he was seventeen. Two years later, he was deployed to Iraq as an Army Engineer. In this extraordinary and harrowing memoir, readers march along one GI's tour of duty. It will change the way you feel about what it means to be an American.

While reading think about these questions:

  1. When we ask young men and women to go to war, what are we asking of them?
  2. What does it mean to be American?
  3. How does Ryan Smithson illustrate American values and ideals?
  4. What was Smithson trying to accomplish, both individually and for America as a whole?
  5. What events, actions, and/or policies did Smithson face and how did he persevere?

As always, the Hawley library will have copies available for students to check out. During the summer if you want to check your selection please feel free to email your American Studies teachers:
