 Reading and Language Arts with
Mrs. Niemuth

I will be teaching all 3rd grade students Reading and Language Arts this year using our Journeys Curriculum as a framework. The BFAS consortium adopted this program several years back. It has proven to be an excellent series. It is aligned with the Common Core State Standards. I am confident with the lessons at school and the extra practice at home reading, every 3rd grader will make impressive growth this year!

Here are the things your 3rd grader can look forward to in reading class.

  • Whole group mini lessons revolving around Common Core State Standards
  • Small group intensive instruction
  • Daily reading fluency practice
  • Independent silent reading, Reading Counts, and IXL time (online program to practice a variety of skills)
  • Story time
  • Spelling and Writing lessons
  • Integration of technology on a daily basis
  • Google Sites support website for extra practice at home and school on current Journeys lessons (see link below)
  • Hands on projects
  • Group work
  • Traditional work book/skill work
  • Cozy safe learning environment
  • Student self-monitoring of reading goals
  • Experienced compassionate teacher/s with strong knowledge of the curriculum, structure, and high expectations

Reading Class Homework Expectations:

  • Nightly Fluency Practice (1 min read with documentation)
  • 15 minutes of Reading Counts reading- silently and aloud with parent or independently
  • Spelling word review- test every 9 school days along with the Reading lesson test
  • Google Sites link to practice lesson related games, spelling, video links, and review for each lesson
