Waltham High School Students Comment on Project - Student Video

This is an exciting time in Waltham!  In so many ways, the Waltham Public Schools operate from a position of strength.  We recognize that we have work to do to improve, but we also know that we deliver programs and opportunities to our students that most communities only dream about.  We are fortunate to have so many great teachers and educators in our system.  This is true at the high school where our teachers have the skills to prepare ALL of our students for the college or career of their choice.  However, our current high school building does not always allow us to deliver everything we would like for students.  As a result of strong leadership from Mayor McCarthy, School Committee, and the high school team, the Waltham Public Schools entered into the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) process in the hopes that we would be invited to compete for a new or renovated school.  After submission of reports, documents and responses to questions, Waltham has moved very far along in the process.  We are honored that at the September 30 MSBA board meeting, Waltham has been formally invited into the next phase (feasibility study)!

The purpose of this website is to inform the Waltham community about where we stand in the MSBA process, why we believe we need a new or renovated high school, and where we are with the educational vision/plan should we be invited into the feasibility and design study, as well as other important details.

The mantra of the school department has been “One Waltham.” We are one community and we are excited and inspired to deliver to this community one state of the art high school that provides an enriching, project-based education that prepares all students for college, career and the demands of the 21st century.

We would like to call your attention to two important documents.

The first is the education plan for a new or renovated high school.  The MSBA process starts with educational visioning because it must serve as the driver of all future decisions related to design and site location.  We are proud of our educational plan and believe it is bold, ambitious and will better prepare ALL of our students for the demands of college, career and community.  It was a community effort to draft this  document.  We believe this education plan is a game-changer for education in the City of Waltham.  You can find the Waltham High School educational plan at this link:  https://goo.gl/G9CguR.  We encourage all member of the community to read it carefully as it will likely be the most important tool the School Building Committee uses to evaluate the final three options as described in the Preliminary Design Program (PDP) report to the MSBA.

The Waltham School Committee and the Waltham School Building Committee hosted three public hearings to garner feedback from the community about the education plan and about the three concepts that were submitted to the MSBA in the PDP.  You can find the PowerPoint that was delivered by the Superintendent and the project architects during the public hearings here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1RKdQk5zXW0dVVmM0J4OWpZVXM/view
