Course Expectations

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! I hope everyone had a relaxing summer and was able to spend quality time with family and friends.     I have put together the WHS Band Handbook to provide parents and students an important source of information including course expectations, grading policy and performance schedule.

The goal of Concert Band is to provide each student with the opportunity to actively participate in creating quality music in a group setting and develop individual growth in achieving musical excellence.   It is my goal to create a culture that fosters a community in which students respect music, the ensemble and each other.  Students will develop skills in thoughtful reflection and critical thinking that will create a caring, positive and welcoming atmosphere for all students.

My priority as a teacher at WHS is to provide every student with the opportunity to succeed and give them all the resources available.  One great tool in becoming a better musician is to have the ability to take private lessons.   The Walpole Public Schools now offers a music private lesson program after school available to any music student.  The private lessons are taught by highly qualified professional instructors who have demonstrated excellence in their performing and teaching.   In addition, students will be using SmartMusic to enhance their practicing and provide consistent feedback on their development throughout the year.  Parents will receive a letter providing all the details about SmartMusic and how to obtain your child’s subscription.

I would like to also have the opportunity to meet every parent/guardian at the beginning of the school year.  The WHS Back To School Night is scheduled on Thursday, September 27th from 7:00 to 9:00.  If you are unable to attend, I am happy to find a time that would be more convenient for your schedule.

Please make sure to take the time read the rest of the handbook.  All band members are responsible for knowing and understanding the information herein.  Please add all concert dates in your calendar, as these performances are the culminating event of the course. After you have read the handbook, please sign and return the WHS Band Handbook form which is located on the last page.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  The best way to reach me is by email, which I check on a regular basis.
