    Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE), established in 1997, is one of the prestigious colleges in Mysuru city. This institution has been consistently ranked as one of the top ten institutions in Karnataka and a leading private institution in the region of Mysuru. Education and knowledge are the two pillars of the society. These facets will invariably lead to three E’s viz., Enthusiasm, Effervescence and Ecstasy and three D’s viz., Dedication, Devotion and Determination. A department of this institution with the said attributes, dexterous staff, diligent thoughts, pragmatic approach and which is highly resourceful and magnanimous to promote state-of-the-art facilities is the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

                        The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1997 with an annual intake of 60 in under-graduation programme and has grown leaps and bounds since inception. The annual intake was increased to 90 in 2009 and 120 in 2013. The post-graduation in Machine Design was started during the academic year 2013-14. A well-planned block of 4243 square meters on three floors is self sufficient with excellent infrastructural facilities. The present student population in this department is 541. Currently, the department is under the proficient, pragmatic and articulate guidance of Dr. L J Sudev, who obtained his doctoral degree in ‘Tool Condition Monitoring’.         

            The Department of Mechanical Engineering has state-of-the-art laboratories. This department comprises the prominent laboratories viz., Basic Workshop, Computer Aided Engineering lab, Metallography and Materials Testing lab, Metrology and Measurements lab, Foundry and Forging lab, Machine Shop, Energy Conversion Engineering lab, Fluid Mechanics and Machines lab, Heat and Mass Transfer lab, Computer Aided Modeling and Analysis lab and Design lab. These laboratories not only satisfy the curriculum requirements of the students very lucidly, but also provide additional facilities to enhance the practical knowledge. It has excellent computing facilities and resources in terms of both hardware and software. The department has 111 computers installed with a wide range of commercially available software packages. It has ISHRAE-VVCE showcase, which is first of its kind in Karnataka.

            The department has able and dedicated faculty members from all specializations of mechanical engineering viz., Thermal Engineering, Design Engineering, Production Engineering and Management. The faculty members are not only qualified and experienced, but have admirable adeptness, service mindedness and versatility in both teaching and research. Six faculty members have their doctoral degree and 18 faculty members are pursuing Ph. D. The department is exceedingly proud to have a VTU recognized research center and 17 research scholars from this institution and other institutions are pursuing Ph. D. The faculty members of this department have the potential in adopting new teaching or Pedagogical methods that are beneficial for strengthening the skills among student fraternity. The faculty members have presented many papers in national and international conferences. Few faculty members of this department have presented their papers in international conferences abroad. They have published many papers in prolific international journals also. In addition to this aspect, this department is known for following best teaching practices and techniques in the region of Mysuru.  

The department organizes Invited talks for the students to ameliorate the academic standards and to enhance the theoretical and practical skills and competencies. The visionaries, academicians and technocrats from the leading and esteemed academic institutions and industries have delivered the technical content for the students efficaciously. To have utmost competency in practical aspects, the department frequently arranges industry visits for the students. The students have been greatly privileged to visit many esteemed industries.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organizes Conferences, Workshops and Faculty Development Programs periodically. These activities will greatly benefit the faculty members to comprehend the essence of teaching and can teach very effectively and proficiently. Additionally, the workshops and faculty oriented programs will be a premier forum for academia to understand the technical subjects with ease. Likewise, many student oriented workshops have been organized. Based on the academic and professional accomplishments, this department is ranked the best in the institution, being assessed by Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) constituted by this institution.

The students belonging to this department have secured many ranks in VTU examinations. The students of this department are very active in Co-curricular and Extra-curricular activities. They have won laurels in design of Go-kart and excelled in paper presentation in National and International Conferences. The students have shown active participation in Mini Projects also. The annual project exhibition – VIVACIOUS  is widely acclaimed. The students have won prizes in this exhibition and also have gained extreme popularity. These projects have been of utmost recognition and utility in the society. Few of the student projects have been funded by Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST). Karnataka Council for Technological Upgradation (KCTU) has sanctioned a research grant of worth Rs. 33 lakhs for the research proposal “Study of Natural Fibre Reinforced Polymer Composite.”  The old students of this department have established a strong Alumni Network and have been supportive in the developmental activities. 

In the nutshell, the department has appreciative ideals, thought-provoking ideas, nobility, perseverance and motivation. The department is striving hard to set up few centers of excellence, which will be beneficial to upgrade both teaching and learning skills effectively.
