Mathematical optimization modeling, analysis, and design of algorithms for specially structured linear, nonlinear, and continuous and discrete nonconvex programs, with applications to transportation, location, engineering and network design, production, economics, and energy systems.


  • Principal Investigator on 66 research projects sponsored by several agencies including the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Naval Surface Warfare Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Department of the Interior, Association of American Railroads, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Highway Administration, U.S. and Virginia Departments of Transportation, and the Federal Aviation Administration.


  • Published 352 refereed articles (H-index = 76 and total citations = 36,930, including books, as of January, 2020).   • Published nine books:  Disjunctive Programming (Springer Verlag, 1982), Linear Programming and Network Flows (John Wiley & Sons, 1990, 2005, 2010), Nonlinear Programming:  Theory and Algorithms (John Wiley & Sons, 1993, 2006), A Reformulation-Linearization Technique for Solving Discrete and Continuous Nonconvex Problems (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1999), Applied Optimization Methods for Wireless Networks (Cambridge University Press, 2013), and Spiritual Discourses (Author House, 2014). (Also, edited two other books/journal issues.)


  • Provided Consulting Services on 39 different projects.


  • Presented 318 papers (234 invited seminars/lectures and 84  contributed submissions).


  • Directed 43 Ph.D. dissertations and 44 M.S. theses. 


  • Committee Member for a total of 175 students (99 Ph.D. students and 76 M.S. students).



  • Served as Optimization Area Editor of Operations Research; Associate Editor of Operations Research Letters, Optimization Letters, IIE Transactions, Journal of Global Optimization, Informatica, Computers and Operations Research, Arabian Journal of Science and Engineering, and Aligarh Journal of Statistics (Optimization Area). Book Series Co-editor for Optimization and Control of Complex Systems, and Editorial Board Member for Nonconvex Optimization and its Applications.
