RESEARCH AREA

Mathematical optimization modeling, analysis, and design of algorithms for specially structured linear, nonlinear, and continuous and discrete nonconvex programs, with applications to transportation, location, engineering and network design, production, economics, and energy systems.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE AND PUBLICATIONS

• Principal Investigator on 66 research projects sponsored by several agencies including the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Naval Surface Warfare Center, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, U.S. Department of the Interior, Association of American Railroads, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Highway Administration, U.S. and Virginia Departments of Transportation, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

• Published 353 refereed articles (H-index = 83 and total citations = 43,568 including books, as of January, 2024). Journals include: Operations Research, Management Science, Mathematical Programming, Mathematics of Operations Research, Operations Research Letters, Transportation Science, INFORMS Journal on Computing, SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Optimization, IIE Transactions, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Discrete Optimization, Journal of Global Optimization, Naval Research Logistics, Networks, Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Computational Optimization and Applications, Applied Mathematics and Optimization, Optimization Letters, Transportation Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Annals of Operations Research, and IEEE Transactions.

• Published ten books:  Disjunctive Programming (Springer Verlag, 1982), Linear Programming and Network Flows (John Wiley & Sons, 1990, 2005, 2010), Nonlinear Programming:  Theory and Algorithms (John Wiley & Sons, 1993, 2006), A Reformulation-Linearization Technique for Solving Discrete and Continuous Nonconvex Problems (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 1999), Applied Optimization Methods for Wireless Networks (Cambridge University Press, 2013), Spiritual Discourses (Author House, 2014), and Invocations Inspired by the Qur'an (Author House, 2020). (Also, edited two other books/journal issues.)

• Provided Consulting Services on 39 different projects.

• Presented 318 papers (234 invited seminars/lectures and 84  contributed submissions).

• Directed 43 Ph.D. dissertations and 44 M.S. theses. 

• Committee Member for a total of 175 students (99 Ph.D. students and 76 M.S. students).

SPECIAL PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS

• Served as Optimization Area Editor of Operations Research; Associate Editor of Operations Research Letters, Optimization Letters, IIE Transactions, Journal of Global Optimization, Informatica, Computers and Operations Research, Arabian Journal of Science and Engineering, and Aligarh Journal of Statistics (Optimization Area). Book Series Co-editor for Optimization and Control of Complex Systems, and Editorial Board Member for Nonconvex Optimization and its Applications.

• Prize committees, and conference cluster chair, session chair, and organizer on numerous occasions.

• Technical reviewer for over 1,090 journal articles and several proposals and book manuscripts for 82 journals, 11 international agencies (including 11 divisions of the National Science Foundation), and 10 book publishers.
